Target Marketing: The Top 3 Mistakes That Keep You From Attracting More Clients
Many business owners are reluctant to choose a target market because of the fear that they will lose out on business. This irrational fear is rooted in the mindset of the lack of abundance and in reality causes many business owners and professionals to achieve exactly opposite of the intended results. Here are the top three mistakes and why it is important to target a market and if you don't why you will achieve unintended results.
1. You must know who your market is- most business owners do not have a clear understanding of who they are targeting their message to and as a result do a very poor job of communicating to any marketplace of all. While networking and during other communications they use phrases like "anyone who", or "everybody" is a prospect. This is the most confusing message that you can convey. This results in a lack of qualified prospects.
2. You will not receive many referrals- this is an area where many business owners and professionals struggle. The problem comes in that without a specific target market it is very difficult for potential referral sources to identify who to refer you to.The very worst way to ask for referrals is to say "who do you know."This is very confusing to the referral source and often ends up with no results.
3. Prospects will not identify with your message-most often messaging falls on deaf ears because the audience does not even realize that they are being spoken too. Without a clear identification that they are indeed the target of the message they will not see themselves and will ignore you.
Here are a few things to do immediately.First, take the time to see if there are any natural target markets that you have already established.Examine your client base closely and see if there are any patterns. Second, be as specific as you can when asking for referrals. This will make you more referable. The results will surprise you.Third, be sure were that your message is targeted to the intended audience in such a way that they identified themselves as a prospect.
There are many other reasons to target your market but these three will get you off to a good start.
