  • Google Just Gets Better and Better

One of the things I love about Google is that they keep adding more and more stuff you can do with their site. They seem to have a playful laboratory sense of doing things.

They create new tools and then without much fanfare put em on the site for all to join in on the fun.

Here are two new ones that I use a bunch

Definitions: I know there are plenty of dictionary sites and ways to get definitions but here is my favorite.

At the Google home page type, define:XXXX (XXXX is your word) Hit enter and there you have it. 5 or 6 definitions pop up.

Calculator: Type a math problem or even a math question into the Google search bar and out pops the answer.

5+5, square root of 3492, pints in a gallon.

    Give it a try.

    • I use these functions a lot, John. With Firefox from Mozilla, I can setup keyword searches. With that I just type "define Web", or whatever term I need a definition for, and it comes straight up. It's a real time saver and makes utilizing some of the neat features Google has that much easier.

Another useful tool is "links: domainname.com". It shows you all incoming links to a particular site that Google knows about. There's a website I saw a few months back that has all of the various tools that Google has all in one place. If I can find the URL, I'll be sure to pass it along.

Here is a page that has some more of the Google stuff.

      Google Features
    • Yeah, that page is great in telling you how to utilize the search box at Google, but the page I'm thinking of actually has search interfaces for each of the various types of searches. After a quick Google for "Google Power Search", I found what I was looking for. Soople.com was the site I was thinking of. It's a great resource for diving into all of the various facets of Google.

Thanks, I guess I have heard of that now that you mention it but I had not checked it out. I will now
    • I agree that Soople is pretty useful
