With the introduction of Wordpress themes such as any of the Revolution themes is it really necessary for any organization to have both a static website and a blog?

For example, the Revolution Media Pro (I'm sure there are other themes that do this) several significant categories can be served up on the home page with featured post headlines that capture the visitors attention much the same way magazine headlines compel the shopper to buy the magazine from the rack. Individual posts are then read with a soft call to action and possibly directed to a static page where products or services are offered.

Seems to be more efficient way to draw in the visitor and deliver information to have the company information and blog all in one place.

I would love to read your thoughts on this my opinion.

This is exactly the strategy I recommend to my clients who are primarily solo professionals. I would add an ezine to that list as well in order to reach the people who prefer to get info in their email inbox and to drive traffic to both the blog and website. They are all tools in one's marketing toolbox.

I can attest that the two site concept works! Blog (http://www.okpatents.com/phosita) launched first and then main site. Firm site pulls content from blog and displays on the main website. Almost everyone who visits the main site goes over to the blog. Our next foray will be screencasts and a Wiki but I am having trouble getting my head around how to make it useful as part of an IP firm site.
