Also, thought to add that if you have a small business and want to enhance your image, voicemail greetings recorded by professional voice talent makes a big difference. Our company works with small business owners as well as large corporations and provides custom voicemail, auto attendant, voice prompt recordings for all types of phone systems, even mobile phones. <br>Lecia Macryn Voice Services

Voice-mail is a prime reason businesses lose sales. Today's speed of light multi-tasking executive does not need to listen to a menu of select one (1) for this and two for that and press star 6 to select a name. It's this blah, blah de-da that induces @#%*!@#! and a call to your competitor. I'm taking your advice and crafting a new message each week from now on. 212-777-6778x305.

I agree that voicemails can be boring and that there should be a set of standards, especially for businesses that generate revenue from telephone calls (e.g. Insurance companies and call centres). Standards in voicemail is a must! If your workforce is ‘front-line’ they should be contactable at all times, with the ability to respond to the message quickly and efficiently. This means diverting office phones to mobile, which does not elevate the problem - you still have to setup and listen to the voicemail.

I work for a start-up who has an amazing solution called voicemail-to-text. It is very different in that not only do you have the ability to set up your voicemail message to suit your needs, but you also have the ability to read your voicemail messages as text or even email.

What’s truly brilliant is that no matter where you are or what you are doing you will receive the message.

I know that I am biased but think everyone should have a solution like this - we all use voicemail, but it does not always make our lives easier. This does!

You can try it yourself free for a week www.spinvox.com

John, I started doing this a few months ago and have had several comments from callers who liked hearing a different message. As Rachel mentions including benefits of your product or service with the message is always a good idea.

Here is my message: "Thank you for calling. I am out of the office today showing another company just like yours how to improve their processes and make more money using our software..."

So how often do people suggest voicemail message get updated? Each day, week, month or can a message live for a long time? I know recruiters that update their messages depending on the client's needs. Works well I think because you know what they are hot for when you get to their voicemail.

I agree with John that every point of communication your clients and prospective clients have with your company, product or service should reflect your company’s mission of how it successfully serves clients. It is important for any company to provide a strong, engaging, and professional image. If there is a way to incorporate a little buzz to make someone remember you and call back; then all for the better.

I guess "how long" depends on a few things. We tend to get tired of our own messages and ads way before the market does. If you have lots of repeat callers then you might change it up just so they keep listening. On the other hand, if your callers are frequently new, create a good one and stick with it.

In some cases, transmitting useful information like your recruiter can be a great way to shorten the phone tag cycle as well.
