The quote that I like is "Simplify as much as possible. But no more.", ISTR it was first uttered by Albert Einstein.

As I understand it, he meant that it is possible to simplify something to the point that the proper understanding of it is lost. The reverse is also true in the "too much information" condition.

In the ministry the two extremes could be called "Genesis to Revelation in a Nutshell" and "Genesis to Revelation in a Day".

In either case, you're going to be forced into bad communications choices.

David,

I think it is a bit ironic but I actually find it much harder to be simple, clear and concise. I mean, for me, it takes more work - even though I know it's worth it.

I'm reminded of the words of Mark Twain, who was noted for having said, "I would have written a shorter letter if I had more time."

<trackback /><a href="http://muchadoaboutwhatever.blogspot.com/2006/01/keeping-it-simple-stupid.html">Keeping It Simple, Stupid</a>
Not all of us are Powerpoint wizards. And the few of us that actually know how to create "custom animations" and great transitions generally forget the single, most important rule of presentations. Keep it simple.

Interesting post. As a marketing consultant I think I earn half of my income simplifying. Whether it is finding a path through marketing strategy or creating simple value propositions, it's much easier to do something long and complex than clear and concise.

Yes, that's exactly what I mean. I re-read Jack Trout's "Positioning- The Battle for your Mind" and he talks about how we are being over-communicated to (and that won't get any better in a hurry). Simple is the only way to cut through.
