  • The Search Engine Rules Never Change

I got another one of those SEO spams offering to use secret algorithm busting tricks and the latest rule changes to move my web site to the top.

Here’s the deal about search engines. The rules never change.

This is all you have to do:

    • Find out what your market is searching for
    • Create good content around those searches
    • Write well formed HTML around those searches
    • Network like hell to get links around those searches

That’s it. No Florida, no Jagger, no Google Dance to be named later will ever have a negative impact on your traffic if you follow these three simple rules of web site optimization.

    • One more thing to add: update often. Google likes active sites, not dead ones. If it's a blog, make sure the syndication feeds work properly and are linked in the head section of every page, Google spiders look for them. HTML, CSS and RSS validators can help pinpoint any problems with your code. Finally, move to XHTML and move all your design in CSS, instead of cluttering your HTML code with nested tables, font changes and all that.

Thumbs up for the excellent blog, John!

You are right on every point - I just didn't want to freak people out with XHTML and CSS when I'm still preaching content. . .and, on that one, I need to do a better job myself before I can get too high and mighty with it.

      Thanks for adding this!
    • I compare the so-called "SEO wizards" to diet pills: they may produce results in the short term, but over time they'll end up hurting you.

For a little bit of irony, the two ads that Google served up on this comment page were:

      Search Engine Submission
Get top positions on 40+ Search Engines in 6-8 hours guaranteed.

      Free Website Traffic?
Submit to 500,000 High Traffic Sites Now. 100% Guaranteed!
    • Updating itself doesnt get you any higher in rankings. It just makes sure spiders visit you more often, so that eventual new content is spidered quicker.

BTW, it was 4 simple rules, not 3 ;)
