  • Every Business Needs Both

Most people go into business because they know how to do something. The problem is that’s not enough. For a business to thrive you must also know how to dream much bigger about that something, identify and seize opportunities where others don’t, and put yourself in the shoes of your target market.

To me, the perfect business, [maybe it's the perfect person] consists of both poet and technician. Kinda like marketing and operations I guess. The poet’s job is to be unreasonable, romantic and thought provoking. The technician’s job is to be realistic, accountable and systematic.

Blend the poet and the technician and the internal struggle can produce something magical. But, too much poet and you’re constantly chasing the next cool, fun sounding thing. Too much technician and you might end up stagnant and boring. If you lack one or the other, go out and get it somehow! Hire it, partner with it, marry it, raise it, just make sure your business is always creating, pushing, producing and looking for opportunities to fill.

    • You're absolutely right John. As a Virtual Assistant, I represent that "technician" for hire. But sometimes, as a solopreneur, I have to quiet my inner "poet" just to get my own work done! What a great problem to have though.
    • I'd say you need structure. I've seen businesses founder not because they haven't worked hard--or because they haven't got the organisational capability, but they remain not just small--but struggling.

So structure could be defined as building a home. The interior design and the maintenance is fine, but if the structure isn't in place, then it's darned hard to keep the whole thing sturdy.

      An example would be:
      Thirty clients from one source.
Or one client from thirty sources.

The second one needs structure, and ensures a regular flow of clients. The first one, could work, but it's more likely for the second one to work much better.

    • <trackback>The Natural Advantages of Small Business - the video
The following is a video I compiled from a popular presentation I give. I firmly believe small businesses possess certain innate advantages over much larger competitors. The question is - </trackback>
    • Good stuff! Around here, we encourage clients to take time off from working "at their business" to work "on their business." In other words, as you said, a little less technician and a little more business person. However, the problem is that most don't know HOW to work ON their business...
    • Exactly Marianne! I actually blogged very recently about working "on" your business, as a result of another article I read at The Virtual Nation. I provided my blog link this time if you want to check it out.

I also just read your own blog post - "Appealing to the Senses...". Good, good stuff. My own marketing is mainly about the Auditory right now, which I recognized as critical in a service biz and sought help with. Once I have their attention I also provide the Visual (presentation materials, etc.)

Thanks for sharing! I'm just about to subscribe to your newsletter...
    • Thanks Denise! I'd love for you to share your tips with my readers - adding sensory dimension to our marketing and to our businesses in general is a great way to truely connect with our customers in a memorable way.
    • Thanks for the invite Marianna! I subscribe to your blog now, so will jump in whenever I feel I can contribute something useful. Have a great weekend!
    • Good thinking! The problem is that you need a balance between the two and very few people have it. If you lack one of the both, then it is also important either to train yourself in the other you have less or to hire one that gives you the ideas you simply can’t get out of your head. It’s so difficult to have a balance!
