  • Advisory Boards as a Small Business Growth Tool

    Stephen and Andrew MacGill, father and son co-founders of PeerSight, stopped by the Duct Tape Marketing podcast recently.

    PeerSight has created an online version of the proven “advisory board” model aimed at small business owners. PeerSight helps small business owners join an advisory board that matches their needs and then facilitates activities inside that board including regularly scheduled online meetings, content and expert advice.

    They have also supplemented the program with forums and resources directories. They offer a free 60 day trial to see if the fit is right.

    Not having anyone to bounce ideas off is the major complaint I field from small business owners. Forming an advisory group either on or offline is a great way to address that gap.

    • Great idea. We -- the Women Presidents' Organization -- also have found that nothing beats having a peer grouop to bounce ideas off of so you can reach further, together in growing your business.

    • As we released the names of the Best Practice winners of the New York Enterprise Report Small Business Awards, we started to hear from many chairs and facilitators that mentioned that finalists were in there group. By my estimates, over 50% of the finalist were in a peer group.
    • Agreed. We've been building our startup within the confines of a small consulting firm, which has proven to be invaluable in this regard. We bounce questions around constantly, and the feedback has made us much stronger. I consider us fortunate to be in such circumstances.
