John - Pay per call is so obvious I can't believe people haven't embraced it yet. As Internet pros we can usually dig up answers from the search engines pretty quick but you'd be surprised how many people get sick of digging through web site trying to find what they're looking for. And if they do find a likley link, abandonment figures prove how often the site didn't have the goods. I don't agree on the click to call model however - requiring people to enter their phone number in order to get connected. Too much room for pranksters and competitors to screw up the whole thing. Far better for them to call the number directly.

Phone calls work because buyers want immediate answers from knowledgeable
salespeople and advertisers are looking for qualified purchase inquiries.
Our research has shown that phone sale conversions can be 15 times higher than conversion
rates for web sites.

Good point Jack. I have to admit, I've had the experience you described. I suppose anything that makes it easier for the customer, is worth looking into.

I especially like the point that Dan made about the ability to port information from the user's session into the live call. Most small businesses aren't using VOIP, though, so that may be a ways away for SMBs.

Jack, anything in the works for Skype integration with ClickToConnect?

Doug,

That is something that I have not thought a great deal about but after a 3 hour flight, I like it.

I'll keep you posted on the Skype/Click-and-Connect integration.

There are also certain click to call applications that allow the option of reaching an agent in a live online window. These applications are preferable because it gives the opion of a more removed live conversation to the participant. The psychology of being on the Web includes the avoidance of pressured sales... once you've given out that phone number, you have taken a step toward communcating with that company that some consumers are not prepared to take... even when they do have the need.

Check out www.apropros.com and others, with the click to chat as well as click to call option.

On the surface, click to call technology seems like it's just a simple call connection. And for the most part, that's a good thing.

But the true benefit of click to call lies in its potential to deliver a much more personalized experience for the consumer than is possible with a standard telephone number.

For online marketers, standard phone numbers are a black hole. However, IP-based click to call and call tracking solutions combine the detailed information of Web analytics with the convenience of the phone.

Nothing is more frustrating for a consumer than spending a good amount time browsing online, only to reach a point where they have to make a phone call. With standard phone contact, the context of their online session is wasted.

However, robust click to call solutions, such as those being used by Amazon.com and Continental Airlines, maintain the context of the shopper's online session when they transition to the phone channel.

This prevents the need of having to "start all over again" when they cross over from the Web to the phone channel, and goes a long way towards establishing customer loyalty.

One of the marketing tools I use just released this feature with a lot of fanfare and I fail to see the real benefit.

The tool simply works as an autodialer to connect two phone numbers. Possibly slightly easier than actually dialing the phone number, but could this really make any difference?

Far better are the 'live person' scripts that engage prospects and customers in a live chat.

I still find it amazing concerning your first sentence about business marketers making as easy as possible to do business with.

Not only to small business owners struggle with this, but huge companies still don't implement things that are built for simplicity and ease of use.

One example is online retailing. There are still many companies that make you take far too many steps to simply buy something from them. The abandonment of online shopping carts is still a huge problem for a great many companies.
