  • Visual Previews of Links in Your Blog

Snap.com, a fairly new and interesting looking search engine, is offering web site and blog owners a handy little device. (Thanks to John Battelle at Searchblog for pointing this out.)

The tool is called Snap Preview Anywhere and allows a surfer to hover over any link that has been enabled by this service and see a very nice visual window of what the page they might choose to surf to looks like.

Here’s a page I am building to promote my book that is due out in about 6 weeks. Duct Tape Marketing – The World’s Most Practical Small Business Marketing Guide. (Hover over the link and you can get a quick view of the page.)

Adding this feature to your web site is simple and free – just add a line of javascript code provided by snap when you complete the sign-up process. Tools like this won’t make or break your blog, but I think they add to the overall experience.

    • Nice tip, but how many javascript additions can a page take? In the last two years seems everyone is building javascript plugins, addons, and enhancements.

Personally, I try to stay away from as many of those types of blogging tools as possible. Plus I question the real value of such a tool? You are the marketing guy, does it increase click-through?

I can see how it could help if you had a page with a large graphic or message that encouraged them to click through.
    • John,

thank you for the very interesting tipp.
I will check it out on my own blog.

      Many thanks.
    • I actually find this feature disturbing. It distracts me from the article I am reading and has disturbed my reading experience. Maybe I will get used to it but for now I do not like it
    • Thanks John,

I think this is a pretty neat feature--one worth trying out. In fact, I just added it to my blog.

I stuck the code on my site but found that to be too distracting because there are lots of internal links on the pages.

But for a blog with lots of external links within the content, I think it's a cool feature worth trying out.

      Thanks!
      Christine
    • John,

Thanks for the tip. I like the concept but as Greg asked, does it improve click through rate?
    • John,

Thanks again for installing and using Snap Preview Anywhere! I am glad to see people commentimg on the product. If you have any thoughts on how you would improve it, I would love to hear them.

To answer one of your commenters questions about click thru... Snap Preview Anywhere improves click thru rate for good sites and reduces them for bad ones. Let me explain in more detail, in essence with our product, blog readers are now making more pre-meditated or qualified clicks to sites, versus blindly clicking as they once did. Our product revolutionizes the way people interact with links on blogs.

One thing to note about our product is that you CAN exclude 'internal' links from this behavior to minimize the annoyance factor for certain people. You can get the details on how to do this in our official FAQ for the Snap Preview Anywhere product...

    • <pingback>...here, I’d like to see what it looks like. Popularity: unranked [?] ...</pingback>
    • Thanks for this tip.
I think something like this makes a blog look a little more professional. That perhaps will influence readers to return.
