The worst part is that it's not just the "questionable" businesses doing it. Some respectable old media firms seem to be completely clueless about managing new media.

Seth Godin recently posted that he got a series of e-mails from Reed Elsevier asking him to swap links in order to try to "trick" Google into moving them higher up in the rankings.

Naturally, he refused.

About a month ago, I got a series of e-mails from another old media company with a forced free trial. They sent me five or six e-mails with issues of their newsletter, subscription pitches (the newsletter costs $895/yr!), and cross-selling other products --- all unasked for, and all within a week or so!! It's one thing to do this with snail mail, but in e-mail it's just an inch away from spamming.

There are many scams out there in the form of links and there always seems to be websites, using strategies, trying to beat the search engine algorithms.

Thanks for this one. You are correct of course. The temptation is mighty, but the truth is it's kind of like dating versus casual. One means something, the other definitely doesn't.
