  • Ringtone Branding – Another way to spread the brand

Ok, this one might not be earthshattering, but it’s kind of fun. Sound is a great way to build brand recognition – think about all the jingles over the years that you could not get out of your head.

Mobile phone ringtones have become big business for indy artists and record labels (not to mention the service providers.) Why not come up with or adapt some musical branding element that would make a great ringtone and put it on your phone, the phones of your sales folks and maybe even offer it to clients and web site visitors. That way, your musical jingle can make its mark everywhere cell phones ring – like, everywhere.

Creating one these is not that tough. It’s basically an mp3 file, ideally about 15-20 seconds in length. I’ve created the official Duct Tape ringtone that I’m predicting will go down as one of the more popular ringtones for duct (and duck) tape lovers around the world.

Here’s how you can add it to your smart phone (with a web browser.)
Point your phone’s browser to http://www.johnjantsch.com/podcasts/dtringtone.mp3 and then download the file to your phone and assign it as a ringer. (you can also just click on the link to play it in your mp3 player or right click and Save As to download for later.)

I co-wrote this little jewel so download and pass on without copyright fear.

    • John, great post! Ok, I am a little biased as our website, www.myxertones.com, offers a free service that enables anyone to create, share and even sell their own ringtones and wallpapers and deliver them to any phone... With our MyxerTags, you can offer ringtones you create right from your own blog, webpage, myspace page etc.

Your thoughts on ringtone branding are right on target. We have had authors use ringtones to promote book releases, and everyone from State Fairs to Charities, and College Alumni associations use ringtones and mobile wallpapers to promote their brands and events.

We have tried to radically simplify mobile content so that anyone can do exactly what you are talking about in your post! Thanks!
    • Hi,

I am not convinced. All those jingles you couldn't get out of your head were never promoted by ringtones, but other forms of airplay. Most popular ringtones are short version of popular songs etc., which is why it's big business.

Having a ringtone version of a theme of a
n ad could work as an extension of what you're promoting alreasy, but on its own?

I think exploring the idea of what can be done with a ringtone is interesting, but I think it should tie in with something bigger that actually carries a message.

    • Hi John,

Even though a ringtone on its own didn't convince me, it did inspire me to find some creative uses for it.

I have listed 3 of them on ottotromm.com

      Otto,

I agree with the idea that the ringtone, or for that matter anything you do in the name of marketing, should tie into some other initiatives. This won't be a big one for most businesses, but it could even be a conversation starter for some, and that might be all it needs to be.
    • Otto, here is an example of a ringtone being used as part of a larger marketing initiative (as John suggests above): Popular Podcaster and author Scott Sigler used a ringtone as part of a promotion to get his fans to buy his book ANCESTOR on April 1. He encouraged his fans to use his ringtone promo as their default ringtone so that when their phone rang, everyone in earshot would hear about his book (ANCESTOR reached #7 on the Amazon Charts on April 1!). You can find the ringtone by searching for ANCESTOR at Myxertones. More than 100 fans downloaded the ringtone. If each of their phones rang 10 times a day, and 3 people hear it ring, that's more than 3,000 "audio impressions" a day, for a cool, simple and FREE promotion...
    • Thanks for the creative idea John. Being a musician myself, I like the idea of employing music/sound into marketing efforts.

Generally, I agree with Ottos' comments. I do however, see a "jingle" useful in branding podcasts, as an entry clip when logging onto a blog or web site or simply offering your new branding tune as a ringtone on your site just for fun and a means to keep in front of your readers.

I'm an advocate of creativity using every genre available. Who knows... possibly there will soon be a new breakout reality TV show featuring original ringtones! What a marketing opportunity!
    • Great blog John. With all the competition these days one has to stand out and attract and retain the consumer. Therefore the little things that add brand value should be considered when branding.
