  • I Think The New York Times Gets It

It’s sad to see how hopelessly lost many print newspapers are as they grapple with how to hang on to the changing way in which news is created, reported, and, certainly, consumed.

The New York Times seems to get it better than most. This month they introduced something I’ve been after for a while. It’s called Times Reader.

Essentially, this new format allows subscribers to view and read the Times online with a hint of the feel of the printed paper. The fonts and look actually resemble the layout the paper instead of most online versions of newspapers that look like they were created with the hope that no one would actually want to read them online.

The layout of the reader allows you jump from section to section, read a 7 day archive, save, print and email articles. One of my favorite functions keeps track of what you’ve read. You can also Sync Times Reader and have the entire paper on your laptop for the train.

    • this windows framework is taking forever to download and install. let's hope this nyt reader thing is worth it.
    • Certainly it adds great value to online reading, with nice and clear look with more white and bit green. Even the fonts are bit bigger than the average and will improve readability.
    • In Malaysia, The Star newspaper had launched such service long ago. They provide the online newspaper version with lower subscription compared to the actual paper.
    • Iagree that it is a move in the right direction for the NYT's.
I am not sure about the revenue model though. They way people gather there news now, do they want to pay for the privilege of the Reader? You have a generation of people now who have become accustomed to never having to pay for content (or have never experienced it).
Though the possibilities in this area a significant. News aggregation services etc (like blog/news readers) are definitely where things seem to be heading.
    • Hopefully other biggies will follow in NYT's direction!

This is a feature that the Investors Business Daily has had for years.
