  • Where’s Aretha When You Need Her

10 Candles for Blogs - Aretha FranklinSam McManis of The Sacramento Bee wrote a little piece today that landed him in a few newspapers around the country. The story is titled 10 Candles for Blogs.

In the story he reveals that blogs have become popular (now there’s a revelation), but then ends it with this statement (I’m not making this up)

So, in another 10 years, maybe blogging will have matured enough to gain the respect to go with the popularity.

What? You mean you don’t actually r-e-s-p-e-c-t me? You just use me cuz I’m popular?

Earth to Sam, that ship sailed a while back!

    • Respect is overrated.

My fellow romance writers are always moaning about lack of respect.

      Lack of respect?

Its the number one genre. The readers are showing respect with their hard earned dollars.

For bloggers, readers show it with eyeballs. Time is even more precious than dollars.

      Kimber,

I agree - you make your own definition of respect - I was mostly poking fun at the "so doesn't get it" reporter.
    • Hmmm, Aretha maybe, but wasn't it Liberace who was "I cry all the way to the bank?"

      Tim - Indeed!

'Respect' is an Otis Redding song.

Just making sure the originator gets his props.

      Thanks

Longy, Ok, sure Otis wrote it and recorded it first, but Aretha owned it.

    • You know it's true, John!

That's why you have to write books on the side, so that you can earn some real "dead tree" level respect.

      (Yes, I'm joking.)

    • Nice, lol; Sam is lost in space, or I mean time...To paraphrase Drucker, when you have a vested interest with a standard model you're closed to accepting a different view. - When you value the map more than the territory it represents, you've officially lost it.
    • Sam isn't living on the fringe with entrepreneurial blog writers. Just goes to show that some people can look at swirling vortex of cash and say "those bills are flying by too quick for me to catch" - Small Ideas, Big Benefits
    • Re Jott: Yes, and George's gal could have been e-mailed every day for weeks reminding her...

Re Blogging: A lot of people still don't "get" blogging; I've been trying for months to get other local business women to contribute to www.WEBlogMV.com with little success.... any suggestions? I think it could really help local biz women get noticed but - referring to your other article mentioned in the e-mail - no one "has time"... we all have the same amount of time—it's all about what we do with it...
    • ironically, let's hope that in 10 years he still can get a job at a traditional newspaper.
