  • I want my iStockphoto fix

Lesa KingI visited with Lesa King, editor of the Graphic Reporter, author the Lynda.com training series – Graphic Secrets for Business Professionals and chief evangelist for iStockphoto for a recent edition of the Duct Tape Marketing podcast.

Lesa gave the Duct Tape Marketing Coach network a guided tour of iStockphoto at my annual gathering of coaches. For those of you who may not know about iStockphoto, you simply must. If you use images, illustrations and video clips in your marketing, this is a gold mine. Great, royalty free stock photos, that are easy to find and inexpensive.

Some of my favorite tips and tricks Lesa shared had to do with ways to find great photos.

    • Do a search and look deeper into the results to find great photos that might not be used by as many folks
    • Search by color to find photos that possess a great deal of a color that better compliments your designs
    • Search by CopySpace to find photos that are composed in a way that lets you add type to certain areas
    • Filter search for shots with people, for orientation and price.

iStockphoto is also a big supporter of Duct Tape Marketing and is offering my readers 10 free credits (good for 5-10 stock photos)

Update: Free credit offer has ended – thanks for such a great response!

I am a big user of istockphoto.com, and I also highly recommend them. You can find just about anything on there, and it's good!

But I think your readers should also know about this completely free stock photo site:
      http://www.morguefile.com/

The selection totally sucks in comparison to istockphoto, but if you can find what you are looking for, the quality is often very good.

Once again, I totally recommend istockphoto!

I hope it isn't jerky of me to also recommend an alternative.

      One final piece of advice!

If you are ever hiring a web designer, MAKE SURE that they are using legitimate photos and that they purchased a license for them.

I use elance for web design projects often.

I pick out the photos myself from istockphoto and deliver them to the web designer to use so that I don't risk infringing on anyone's work.

If you use stolen photos, you are eventually going to get caught!
    • istockphoto.com is a great site, I use it all the time especially when designing custom full color business cards for clients. Photos are just a few bucks compared to buying very expensive subscriptions on other sites. I can also easily email clients links to a few photos for their approval before I use them. Great tip John!
    • Thanks for tip about istockphoto. I also agree that it is a good idea to make sure that all of the photos on your site/blog are legit. If you decide to work with a freelancer, selecting your photos not only gives you more creative control, but it ensures that you're using legit photos.
If you are looking for someone to build your site or update it, check out oDesk . There are over 25,000 tested and rated freelancers on the site and the tools oDesk provides makes it easy to work with someone remotely.

    • I love istockphoto, and that "search by colour" function is superb.

Michelle, I do hate it when companies show up on blog comments trying to market themselves. Go away.

Thanks for the istockphoto free code. I just exhausted my account yesterday, so the free credits will come in handy!

Also, thanks to Lars for the tip about www.morguefile.com. I checked it out, and they have some very good quality photos.
