  • Kiva creates new way to fund small business growth

Kiva in UgandaMark Flannery co-founded Kiva.org with his wife a few years ago and their success has forever altered the way entrepreneurs in the developing world get access to the small amounts of capital that can make a huge impact on their businesses and lives. In doing so they’ve also opened up an entirely new channel of micro lending to businesses and individuals who would like a way to help the smallest of businesses get going.

Matt stopped by the Duct Tape Marketing podcast recently to share the Kiva story.

The incredible thing about this system is that it’s a lending, not gifting, system that allows anyone to lend as little as $25 that might go towards a tiny fish selling business in Mozambique allow allow the owner to buy more product and in doing provide a necessary service to a community.

The burgeoning venture has received incredible press attention from the likes of
(The Oprah Winfrey Show, NBC’s Today Show, and President Clinton’s book “Giving”.

    Here’s how it works:

    1. You go to the Kiva site and choose an entrepreneur who has posted and been screened for a need
    2. You make a loan payment for as little as $25 through Paypal or credit card
    3. Receive a journal so you can keep track of how your entrepreneur is doing
    4. Withdraw or reloan the proceeds from your load

The amazing thing about this program which now raises millions of dollars a month for poor entrepreneurs is the load payback is at about 99%.

There a several other volunteer opportunities as well.

what a marvellous idea, so much more inspiring that dropping money in a collection tin, active participation, a chance for these individuals to tell their story and then get a loan, and then you get to follow the progress.

I'll be finding someone on there too loan some money too this week, i hope your other blog readers do the same.

    • Having lived in Africa for almost 10 years, I see the power in micro-financing...the smallest amounts CAN make a huge difference to people. It's exciting to watch people from rich cultures sharing in the joy of giving to people in poorer cultures (economically poorer that is) who often share the same excitement for providing for their families...I met so many resourceful people, who did amazing things with very little capital, that I was certain they would do great things with a little boost. Starting up a business is certainly a huge hurdle...now if we could get the Duct Tape Marketing principles into their hands (and perhaps a somewhat modified version for their culture and economic situation).** The Duct Tape Marketing principles are so unique and seems like they could help people worldwide.

**I will note that in the country where I served it was so common in the local market to see 10 women ALL selling the SAME fish, peanuts, onions or tomatoes. When I inquired why they don't differentiate...I was told that such an idea would disrupt the community those women enjoy...a culture no-no...perhaps Differentiate and Dominate might not be the most appropriate title! ha !
    • I heard about Kiva on CNBC, and saw a backstory about a woman who was able to purchase more inventory for her local store. It was amazing... by simply obtaining $100, she was able to substantially increase in monthly income.
