    FolderShare

    OfficeLive Small Business is an ambitious and almost overwhelming omni application. For some it may be attempting to do too much. But one thing I like about it is there are lots of nuggets buried inside it that can offer some real and immediate benefit, even if you don’t try to integrate the service in its entirety.

    One of those nuggets is called FolderShare and once you set-up a free account, download the Mac or PC software, and give your customer or whomever you choose access to the online folders you create you can work on a file or your customer can work on a file and the most current version will be saved in one place. This way you can open the online file using your desktop version of your software and so can your customer, but the most current version will always be up to date in the folder. You can set it up so that you can’t both work on the file at the same time.

    Disclaimer: I’ve done paid workshops for the OfficeLive Group but like all things I recommend, this is a service I love, promote and use in my own business.

    • I love foldershare - I use it to keep an updated folder for work that I can access both from my work laptop and my home PC. That way I don't need to worry about where I made edits and what the last revision is. We also use foldershare to share photos with relatives. That way I don't need to pick and choose which photos to share - they get them all (reader only access so that they don't erase from my original files) and then they can choose the ones they want to keep.

      How does it let 2 people work on something at the sametime without overwriting the first persons changes with whoever saves last?
    • I think Microsoft needs to understand that once it finally concentrates on web-based products versus the desktop (downloadable) onces - it will make a huge difference. Basically, the projects they create are good but far from the Google's alternatives.
    • Ryan good question, I think the last save is what counts, but it might not affect the other person on what he has up...
    • Thanks John - This very need arose this morning just before reading this post. I love synchronicity!

      @John - I love it too!
    • Hi John,

      In all likelihood, FolderShare will not be continued as Microsoft steps up its efforts on Live Mesh. You will need to signup for an account since it is a Tech Preview: Live Mesh.
