  • Up Your Cashflow

Harvey Goldstein a no-nonsense CPA and author of several books and software programs, including UpYourCashFlow stopped by the Duct Tape Marketing podcast to spread his small business cash flow gospel.

Don't BudgetUpYourCashFlow really isn’t financial software in the strict sense, it takes your real data and tells you where you are headed and where the cash crunches are coming from. As Harvey says, most CPAs are great at telling you where you’ve been, it’s a bit more helpful to know where you are going.

Too many small businesses go belly up when they get into cash flow issues. It’s funny, but I’ve worked with companies that struggle with this concept when they grow too fast – so, it’s not just an issue of getting more sales.

Harvey also takes some shots at his own industry with this very counterintuitive free book – Don’t Bust the Budget, Toss It! – go get your copy – he’s right in line with how I feel about marketing budgets. I get the same question almost every time I speak – “How much should I budget for marketing?” My answer is always the same – as much as you need and as little as you must to meet your goals. Budgeting is guess work and it’s always wrong so why cause all the grief to begin with. Pay attention, measure and adjust based on a marketing strategy.

    • John,

Cash flow is key for small business.

What a refreshing change: a CPA that looks at cash-flow pro-actively rather than after-the-fact, when often times, it's too late.
    • Experience is everything... you start geting a feel for yuor budgeting needs, adjusting, tweaking, perfecting, just to have some surprise come along and blow it all out the water again... But the more you do it the better you respond to these catastrophes..
    • I've done business reviews for over 200 small-medium businesses, in the range from startup to £20M turnover.

What amazes me is that probably only 2 or 3 of these even had a cashflow forecast at all.

The rest had no idea, absolutely no idea that cashflow forecasting is so important. Now it's one of the very first things I do with a client to help them feel more certain about business. It's amazing how relaxed they become quickly.

Thanks for sharing the software - I'm going to take a look at this and see how it might help my clients.

    • It never ceases to amaze me that new entrepreneurs just seem to ignore the cash side of a business in the early stages once they have their bank loan.

In the UK we have a phrase that "cash is king"

There are many a profitable business that has gone bust because they have run out of cash.

I guess businesses should just have a decent cash flow forecast on the go or at least read their bank statements, creditors and debtors list on a weekly basis....
    • Like I say "Cash is King"

If you have in either in business or at home you are ahead of the game.

It comes down to ROI when spending your marketing dollar.
