  • Talking Groundswell with Charlene Li

Charlene LiCharlene Li, senior analyst with Forrester, stopped by the Duct Tape Marketing podcast to discuss social media and her new book, co-authored with Josh Bernoff, Groundswell.

Much of Li’s work at Forrester is in working with very large organizations to help them understand how to use social media, but the funny thing is that most if not all of what is contained in the book applies to small businesses as well. In fact, big companies are actually diving head first into social media in a bit of an attempt to look and feel smaller.

Make no mistake, the Groundswell that Li and Bernoff cover in this book is not a passing trend, it’s a reality.

As a small business owner the only really tough question is not what or how, it’s why. Understand what practical objective you want to achieve (Groundswell covers many) and then pick that one objective and apply the appropriate tool – it’s that simple. Don’t try to do it all – do one thing in social marketing and then move on to the next. (See: Hierarchy of Social Marketing)

    • I went back and looked at the Hierarchy of Social Marketing...am I totally missing the boat by not having a blog? I'm open to anyone giving me feedback - especially you, John, as I have limited time and blogging is time intensive isn't it?

@Linda - you know I'm going to tell you yes - every small business needs a web presence and there is no better way to get that than a blog.

I don't think blogging needs to be time intensive. Do you read blogs? Do you talk to customers and prospects? Just start thinking in terms of answering questions that prospects and customers have on your blog or pointing out other great stuff you've read that you think your prospects might find useful.

If you have any interest in people finding your website when they search online a smart blogging practice will do more good for you than any other single small business marketing tactic.
    • I finished reading the Groundswell book about a month ago. I thought it had some great insight into social techonology and the future of social communities. I wrote a blog post on the book and summaried what the Groundswell means and the key components of what makes up the Groundswell.
