  • Another Tiny Facebook Hack

Consider subscribing to my blog's RSS feed. It's sticky

I’m not really that fascinated with Facebook but many of my readers are so here’s a hack that someone noticed I was doing and they asked me how so figured maybe others wanted to know as well.

Each time I write a new blog post it automatically changes my status in Facebook to something like: John New blog post: The Perfect Referral Motivation http://tinyurl.com/5lzajj- 3 hours ago. The link is a link back to the last post I wrote. All of my FB friends get to see this status update in one way or another depending on how they monitor things and each post gets some traffic from Facebook.

The key to making this work for me is a bit of duct tape automation. As always, I’m sure there are multiple ways to get this done, but here’s mine.

I do it using Twitter as a go between - I use a WordPress blog and have a plug in called Twitter Tools that publishes a tweet to Twitter with each new blog post with the title and a tinyURL back to the post. (Ooh side bonus, it updates my Twitter account and my Twitter followers get the notice too.) Then I use the Twitter Facebook application to post my tweets to automatically update my status on Facebook and send a status update to all my FB friends.

    • I've read a few distress calls from people who got a little sick of their friends twittering over FB. They wanted to know how to shut it off (got to be too much) without unfriending. Sounds like a great hack, but maybe one used in moderation.
    • That's great, John. Thanks for sharing.

One thing I have done -- since I don't always necessarily want my FB status to reflect by latest post, but sometimes just my mood, what I'm doing, or even nothing at all -- is to get the FB app Twitter, which allows you to always have your Twitter status in one spot on your profile, which, of course, you can show or disable under the Applications link. If you keep this box toward the top of your profile, people will see this whenever they check our your profile, such as after a regular Status update or other action, such as a link or video share or wall post. Just an alternative.
    • Another way to do something like this is just to have the RSS feed from your blog automatically publish notes in Facebook evey time you have a new blog post. These notes appear in your friends news feeds.

To do this, Click on "Notes" then "My Notes" then in the settigns on the right click on "Edit Import Settings" and add your RSS feed.

@Mike - thanks I agree - I wrote a post about that exact tactic a couple days ago and that's what got me on this FB hack.
    • OMG... I am so gonna love using this.. I had been using the Twitter thing in FB but have been "manually" updating it with my latest title I posted in my blog.. this is sooo going to make my life easier!!

      Thanks for this hot tip!!
