Tom Wilson, Executive Director of AT&T’s Small Business Group, is my guest this week on the Duct Tape Marketing podcast.

I’m a big fan of technology for the small business because I think it’s one of the great ways to level the playing field. In this show we spend time talking about tools the small business owners and sales folks can use to keep working even when they are on the go and out of the office.

The ability to respond to customers and prospects and do it from anywhere is a true competitive advantage. Enabling your staff to work from anywhere is quickly becoming an expectation.

Given my guest for this show the tools we discuss are obviously AT&T centric, but the concepts, important as they are, apply no matter the brand.

The phone or handset or minitop or communication portal, whatever we end up calling it, is certainly moving towards becoming the lifeline for the entrepreneur on the go.

So, what are your favorite tools for staying on the go and getting work done?

    • Will you be addressing technologies like mp3 players [for downloading podcasts and the value of that] and online phone systems like skype? I've been advised that I might want to look into something like skype since I spend a great deal of time at my laptop. - Linda
    • I looooove my MOTO Q, which I picked because I'm a huge fan of Microsoft Small Business Products. (Just say no to Palm.)

My Moto Q synchs to my Microsoft Exchange account (thanks to Mailstreet.com). GotVMail.com will forward my business line to my cell. Microsoft OneNote allows me to organize my notes and transfer them to my computer. And when I have to take my laptop, I travel stylishly with my VAIO FZ-4000 (the one with the aqua blue cover). Ta-da - I can do business from anywhere!

    • Sorry, John, I should have listened before I posted! I just listened to the podcast and found the information about unified messaging to be interesting plus the information about the ATT/Starbuck's partnership for wireless connectivity. Thanks for facilitating this type of information exchange. - Linda

I am always working away from my office. In fact, I consider my briefcase my office. As such, this is very near and dear to my heart. My must haves: iPhone and Laptop with LogMeIn and Skype installed. LogMeIn gives me full access to my office desktop at no cost and Skype gives me the freedom to make unlimited telephone calls to standard telephone numbers for less than $40 a year. As for the iPhone, well there is no substitute. I wrote a blog post specifically on iPhone usage for small business. In fact all of my blog posts on our company blog (click my name) are about small business technology. There is so much technology available to small businesses out there - and the cost can have minimal impact on your business, especially when you consider the real business improvements.
    • My favourite business tool must be my 3G card. Mobile broadband has made my life much easier, and I am able to do my after hours stuff without being bound to a broadband wall socket.
