  • Original iPhone Users Feel the Love Too

    Share

iPhone 2.0With all the hype surrounding Apple’s launch of the 3G iPhone a lot of original iPhone users were feeling a bit left out.

Over the weekend I updated my iPhone software to the new 2.0 OS and I have to say, there seems like no reason for me to step up to the new phone anymore.

The biggest thing the new software does is open up the App Store. This is Apple’s move that just might make all other phones seem pretty useless. The App Store is a growing library of free and paid applications developed for the iPhone. Users log on and buy or download them much like they might a song from iTunes.

Some of the apps are silly, but many are very useful versions of common productivity tools. As more apps are developed this will only become stronger. I downloaded the Facebook app, Twitteriffic, Whirl, SportsTap, Jott, Eventful and a neat little Spanish language phrase app. I’ll play with these and probably get more and delete some.

Apps like Omnifocus hint at the potential of the mobile device as the universal business utility. Omnifocus is a $20 app that allows you to track lists, projects, tasks and people right from your phone.

A couple of other notable upgrades – much better email management, including mass delete of email and a search type feature in the contacts so you no longer have to scroll through your entire database to find a contact.

Now, if they would just make a real camera I would be a happy camper.

If you’re an iPhone user what apps have you found useful?

    • I purchased my first iPhone on Friday. I love the Twitterific App. Another fun one is GuitarTools.

Now if Apple would just add copy and paste, flash support and a video recorder I'd be completely satisfied.

Texas Hold 'Em and Pandora Radio are my two favorites.
    • Yes, my one year old 1st gen iPhone, has new life and vigor since the 2.0 firmware upgrade and App Store applications installed! I also love Twitteriffic, as well as the eBay and PayPal applications. For fun, I also installed the flashlight and light-saber apps. Although these aren't all that useful, that have brought quite a few people over to check out my iPhone..."how does it do that?" they ask.

      Very cool! Love it!

If there was only a way to download 3G and GPS via APP store to my (4 month) old iPhone!
    • BlogIt is my new favorite app. It allows me to post to Twitter, Facebook and my Typepad blog simultaneously. Don't get much better'n that, my friends.
    • Hi, John -

I upgraded to 2.0 on my 1st gen iPhone over the weekend and have really been enjoying some of the new features. I thought I'd be heading out to buy the 3G this week, but I think I'll wait too.

My favorite apps so far, all free, are:

      - Evernote
      - Twitterific
      - Jott

      Cheers,
      Tammy
    • Still looking for a good offline (iTouch) PDF reader. Anybody know if Readdle is worth the $15? That's on the high side.

Best free game I've seen yet is Aurora Feint, a heavy duty version of Bejeweled.

Zenbe Lists looks like it will acceptably manage the todo responsibilities (also free).

    • Oh, I just feel so left out. Never had an iPhone even once. Wonder if I'll ever get one?
    • Just got my first Iphone Saturday. Now I can't believe I've lived without one this long. Favorite apps are Remote, Pandora Radio and Shazam. Oh yeah, I use it for work too...I swear!

OmniFocus shows the potential of what these applications can become. Syncing data to the cloud and making it accessible from multiple devices is key. GTD apps are just the beginning.

The navigation feature is a good start too. Being able to search Google and find the nearest whatever, should be a wakeup call to those still on the sidelines. Small businesses really need to understand how to make this technology work for them.

And kudos to Apple. They've managed to open up at least one of the telco's and have created a completely new market in the process. To have 10M new applications downloaded in the first 3 days is phenomenal. This takes the phone to a whole new level and unfortunately, is just another nail in the coffin to KC's hometown carrier.
    • Yeah what IS up with the camera.

Half the time it closes without taking a photo. The other half it's a crappy photo.

Any news on the 3G's having a better camera?

@Drew - yes the camera is the biggest let down - I have heard the same from 3G users.
