@Chad - I agree - and I don't think I said they would put PayPal out of business, but they will impact their business. PayPal has some fraud perceptions as part of their brand? Anyway the last two items I bought from Amazon were a bike rack for my car and replacement computer battery for my laptop.

Amazon Payments may have only been released a week or so ago, but there is certainly a buzz around our office about it. They provide both merchants and consumers with more alternatives and have very similar rates than PayPal and Google Checkout, including volume discounts.

In regards to Daniel's comment about Amazon being synonymous with online bookstore, I completely disagree. Simply search for "PayPal Alternatives" -- there has been a lot of negative PayPal feedback which opens the doors for competitors, especially with a trusted name.

Amazon will never beat out PayPal. (Unless PayPal makes a huge misstep) Why? When a consumer hears the word "Amazon" they think online bookstore. When a consumer hears the word "PayPal" they think pay online. Amazon has built a brand to associate with online bookstore, so to try to persuade someone to switch to Amazon to pay online, it doesn't make sense. That is what branding does: associate one idea to one word. To try to associate more than one idea dilutes the brand.

Amazon is an amazing company. Half of the time, you can find books and other stuff cheaper elsewhere. However, they built a brand, expanded the business and they keep doing it. You could teach an entire MBA course on this company alone. They will only get better and bigger over time.
