(HARO)I wrote recently about a great new service called Help a Reporter Out (HARO) – this service, founded by PR Geek Peter Shankman, matches journalists on a story with expert sources. Anyone can sign up to get the three daily emails full of stories just waiting for you to contribute to.

Peter’s enthusiasm and New York pace shine through on this episode of the Duct Tape Marketing Podcast. (Although admittedly I had a microphone issue on this recording and Peter’s voice is a bit muffled) This is a great free tool and every small business should subscribe.

And, here’s a killer referral and networking tip. Subscribe to and read the HARO emails with two hats on. One, look for stories you could add to and two, scan through the queries thinking about any of your customers, partners, suppliers or prospects that could be offered up as resources to a journalist. If you would take 5 minutes a day sending off appropriate story ideas to your network, the referral tap will open in your direction in a matter of a few short weeks.

Remember, referrals are about trust and relationship building and nothing does that faster than showing you are thinking of others and trying to find ways to help them get what they want to succeed.

    • I think there is also another benefit here. You can put together a great resource of freelance writers, and what write about. This can be an invaluable research tool for building up profiles of reporters in your niche. Certainly useful if you want to pitch an idea to them later on.
    • I was reading an article about houseofjerky.net's success using HARO when I got the RSS feed for this post -- Peter Shankman is everywhere!
    • This is great information. I just wrote a post for real estate agents about promoting past clients' businesses as a way of generating good love back in the form of referrals.

But your idea takes it to the next business by actively sending possible press/business opportunities their way.

      Great idea!

I love HARO, and use it all the time to pass out opportunities for clients or readers. In fact, I get so much pleasure from it that I may be a closet PR person. God forbid!

I actually got on the local ABC channel here in Phoenix regarding a story on home security. It has nothing to do with my business, but my alterior motive was to learn the process of tv, get to know the producer and local anchors. All happened, and as fate would have it, as they were at my house filming the segment, we started talking about 4-hour workweek and tons of biz-related stuff. The reporter who interviewed me (who is also the main evening news anchor) said "please pitch me stories!"

      Music to my ears. :)

I love Peter's style -- I am going to include him in the book as a great example of brand spirit.
