This is a tricky one...you have to bear in mind that for these types of systems to take hold commercially they must be adopted by an awful lot of people to become financially viable. As one of the posters above mentions, Ebay are looking to off load Skype owing to the lack of customer usage. The technology is there at present to make this type of communication channel pretty seamless and is also integrated into many new machines these days (ok, perhaps the Mac is lagging behind) so it really boils down to effective marketing and customer understanding. I think this will need to adopted at a far greater rate that it currently is before we really turn the corner and it becomes the weapon of choice in terms of communicating across the copper wires (yes, we still use copper wires here in the uk...and yes, it is slow!).

For me, Google Talk has already been a Skype killer. I've been using the call feature since it launched a couple years ago and that was enough for me to toss Skype. This only makes it better!

We've used Skype a few times in meetings and besides the extra hardware, like webcams and all that it seemed pretty useful.

I haven't checked out Google's version but I would imagine that it might be a little easier to use like a lot of their products.

Well I seem to be bucking the trend, I'm not a Skype fan. I've found the connection to be inconsistent and unreliable outside of my region: Western Canada. Connections to Toronto and Mexico have failed on numerous tries. So I look forward to Google's entry: it's a win/win. Competition will be good for Skype.

I believe the video and voice capabilities of these IM tools have some value for personal use but for businesses they are overrated. Most cell phone calling plans offer an inexpensive unlimited option and with the tax write off the fee is not worth a worry.

The real Skype killer will be the application that can effortlessly talk to the disperate mix of IM platforms integrating voice, video and the other tools.

Just my thoughts for whatever they are worth.
