  • Kiva Gives Entrepreneurs Some Wonderful Perspective

    Share

kivaMark Flannery co-founded Kiva.org with his wife a few years ago and their success has forever altered the way entrepreneurs in the developing world get access to the small amounts of capital that can make a huge impact on their businesses and lives. In doing so they’ve also opened up an entirely new channel of micro lending to businesses and individuals who would like a way to help the smallest of businesses get going.

I think it sort of brings all this talk of economic downturn into better perspective for me.

Matt stopped by the Duct Tape Marketing podcast recently to share the Kiva story.

The incredible thing about this system is that it’s a lending, not gifting, system that allows anyone to lend as little as $25 that might go towards a tiny fish selling business in Mozambique allowing the owner to buy more product and in doing provide a necessary service to a community.

    Here’s how it works:

    1. You go to the Kiva site and choose an entrepreneur who has posted and been screened for a need
    2. You make a loan payment for as little as $25 through Paypal or credit card
    3. Receive a journal so you can keep track of how your entrepreneur is doing
    4. Withdraw or reloan the proceeds from your load

The amazing thing about this program which now raises millions of dollars a month for poor entrepreneurs is the load payback is at about 99%.

There a several other volunteer opportunities as well.

iLinc Web and Video ConferencingThis episode of the Duct Tape Marketing Podcast is brought to you by iLinc – Web and Video Conferencing that’s easy to use, affordable and powerful enough to make your online meetings really come alive.

    • Kiva is a wonderful site that should be promoted more than it already is. It really encourages people to donate while still being able to receive their money back. Regardless of whether I receive any money back, I still like the idea of providing the people on Kiva money they would normally not be able to get.
    • It is amazing the percentage of payback. Really, I think, the crisis may now seriously spoil this percentage.

    • John,

Thanks for posting this. When we're all supposed to be thinking about what we're thankful for, it helps to see where others are. Seeing these peoples plights and goals puts our abundance in perspective. How can we not help them to achieve what we ourselves are so fortunate to have?

Kiva has made it simple for my family to help others. Hopefully others will do the same.

    • Love how easy Kiva makes it to lend money. In Stephen Covey's, The 8th Habit, he tells the story of Muhammad Yunus, founder of the Grameen Bank, "a unique organization established for the sole purpose of extending microcredit to the poorest of the poor in Bangledesh-I asked him when and how he gained his vision. He said he didn't have any vision to begin with. He simply saw someone in need, tried to fill it, and the vision evolved. Muhammad Yunus's vision of a poverty-free world was set in moiton with an event on the streets." Kiva is an extension of this vision and it allows all of us with access to the internet to easily participate without having to step back and create some huge vision...all we have to do is contribute to a solution. HOW INCREDIBLE. Thanks John for the reminder and Happy Thanksgiving!

    • Thanks for the reminder on Kiva. I had heard of it some time ago and as entrepreneur was enthralled by the idea, but I hadn't explored it enough to engage. The holidays area perfect time to participate.
    • I was just talking with a friend the other day about microlending. I'm going to Kiva now to make my donation in thanksgiving for all the blessings in my life.
    • Great idea to use this as part of a Christmas present! And John, just thought I would let you know there is a typo in your link to get to your podcast page. Definitely going to listen right now, thanks.
    • i have been a fan of micro loans, regardless of the source, for as long as I have known about them. Smaller loans that get 'real stuff' and become business that EARNS to the loan can go back into the 'kitty' for the next person. I've heard of them in 3rd World countries, with women in the US and believe they are a better answer than thousands of $$$ at risk. Thank you for this information

@Morgan - it's certainly part of my families' holiday plans as well.
    • I'm really glad you put that post up. What makes lending money through Kiva very attractive is the journal you get to keep track of 'your' entrepreneur. This is going to be my parent's xmas present! Excellent!
