  • Are You Time Zone Challenged?

With the move to Internet technology, marketers are easily reaching prospects around the country and around the world through teleseminars, online meetings and webinars.

Serving this world community or being served as a member of the world community presents some folks with time zone issues.

This seems like such a silly thing to devote a post to, but I get lots of questions every time I host an event.

Like, but what time does that make it in Arizona (no daylight savings time there), what’s the difference between PST and PDT? (one is the standard time and one is the designation for daylight savings time and you need to use the correct one throughout the year to be most correct), what’s a GMT anyway? (very American question, but Greenwich Mean Time is the 0 time and I’m in GMT-6 or Central Time in the US)

Okay, none of that really matters though if you just use this online World Clock. You don’t need to know much about time accept that if you are attending a webinar that is listed as Noon CST, just plug that into the world clock and it will determine the current offset of time.

You can even set-up meeting planners that allow you to input the four different cities of the attendees and produce a table of times for all concerned. You can create a personal world clock and always know what time it is in your most frequented time zones and cities.

If you market online with events it’s a good idea to publish a link to this kind of tool on your registration and event pages so that people can access the correct time of the event.

I have noticed that this issue seems to challenge men and women in different ways, but that’s all I’m on that.

    • I use this all the time -- it's a great tool.

During my first months as a meeting planner, I called one our speakers (whom I had never spoken with before) without even thinking about the time difference. I woke him - it was 6am in Calif! I apologized and hung up.

Later that day I called him and told him I had the strangest dream. That I had called him and woke him. Did he have that dream too? He did laugh but it taught me a big lesson. The world (and world time) does not revolve around my schedule!!
    • Those people who are still sleeping when I start my day are always a challenge for me! I 'hate' missing a webinar because it was over after I miscalculated.

For ongoing client work between time zones, Outlook Calendar can be set up to show multiple time zones so I don't have to count on my fingers to figure out the difference.

      Good blog post
    • YES! I am time zone challenged! There have been a couple times when I've called early or late for client meetings--ALWAYS a huge embarrassment! Thanks for the clock reference. I will be bookmarking it!
    • I use Sharp World Clock windows software and set it up to display cities that I refer to frequently.

It works great and I'm able to take a glance on time quickly.
    • Time Zones - ugh! Thank you for bringing this up. VERY relevant. Just within the U.S. it can be a challenge. Imagine 6 consultants in a group in all the U.S. time zones, and imagine communicating the conference call and web meeting times. Throw in a little international expansion, and my head starts to spin.

P.S. - Under your blog it says "Posted by: John Jantsch on Dec 10, 08 | 6:06 am"... Is that your time or my time? (PST) :-D
    • This is a critical issue as you say when it comes to making meetings. This site is definitely a great simple site that serves its purpose. I do like that it includes many major US cities.
    • Take a look at Globex Pro - World Clock, it does the same thing and more. It shows the time based on North American phone area codes, as well as hundreds of cities.

It also has a World Time Converter tool to help with the scheduling of meetings and appointments.
    • Ooops... forgot to mention it's at:
      http://www.cosmin.com/globex/globexPro.html
    • The World Clock is great. I have clients in the U.S. Europe and Asia, and used to have to manually figure out what time it was in each place. And then there was always Daylight Savings Time to trip me up!

The Internet has made the world smaller. Sites like timeanddate.com facilitate business and communication across national boundaries.
