  • Tired of Hearing About E.D. – then do something

I don’t know about you, but I’m getting tired of all the talk of economic downturn (E.D.) and I think, as a group, small business owners are too.

Therefore we hereby declare March 9-13, 2009 – Make a Referral Week.

Make a Referral WeekMake a Referral Week is an entrepreneurial approach to stimulating the small business economy one referred business at a time. The goal for the week is to generate 1000 referred leads to 1000 deserving small businesses in an effort to highlight the fact that this simple action can blossom into millions of dollars in new business. Small business is the lifeblood and job-creating engine of the economy and merits the positive attention so often saved for corporate bailout stories.

The week long virtual event will also feature daily education programs focused on teaching small business owners and other marketers how to tap the power of referral marketing. The featured session includes a live web conference with Ivan Misner, founder of BNI and author Masters of Networking, Bob Burg, author of Endless Referrals and the Go-Giver, Bill Cates, author of Get More Referrals Now. (Here’s the full list of education planned for the week)

No money is exchanging hands, no sponsors are being hit up, it’s just something that we thought needed to be done. If you want to get involved in this small business happening visit the Make a Referral Pledge page and submit your intention now to make at least one referral during the March 9-13 event. (Take this step and you are automatically eligible to receive audio recordings of the entire expert series)

Once you pledge you will also find tools that make it easy to refer friends, post to your Facebook profile and blog about the week. If you would like to actively promote visit the sponsor page for additional tools.

During the week of March 9-13 we will activate the Referral-o-meter to track the march to 1000 referrals as small business owners visit and describe who they referred a lead to and why.

This is every small business person’s chance to be a part of the solution!

uh...how does you moving your business from ABC co down the street to XYZ co create anything?

Not one of the brightest ideas I have heard....but I'll be looking out for those referrals!!
    • John Jantsch
      @ric - wow - I don't know where to start.

Making a referral, helping out someone you care about, helping your customers get something they need is not moving your business to another company, it's creating more value for your business.

No question, proven time and time again, the best way to get referral is to give referrals - until you get this, until you get the strategy of building a network of proven strategic partners around your business you will never fully understand the power of marketing momentum . . . and I guarantee you, you won't be receiving any of those referrals you are on the lookout for.

Please, other commenters come to ric's rescue here
    • Truly impressive. I wonder how big this impact will be.

@KJ - I don't know, but let's go for it - see what we can do by using what we've got.
    • This is awesome. I will pass it forward and I am all in need.
    • Chris
I like this. Nice play on ED.

    • Great idea John. Love the concept and we'll be sure to participate!
    • 1000 referral in 4 days? We need to have huge network to do that.
    • John Jantsch
@Atniz - it's actually 5 days and it's the entire community - including global partners - this should be a piece of cake.
    • Here's my response to ric:

Sharing referrals isn't exclusively moving business from one company to another. It also consists of providing a valuable asset (the referred business) to someone that may be on the fence and not sure they are ready to jump in with a fear of who will provide the best service/product. Someone may be putting off the decision to do business at all and a good referral can influence them to go forth.

Additionally, moving business to small businesses may impact the US economy by bringing business back home. Are you currently doing business with an internet provider who outsources their call center to someplace in India? Perhaps finding a good quality internet provider through referral can bring all that business back to the states.

These are just 2 ways that this program can make a difference. I'm in.
    • It would be good to have a similar scheme here in the UK.
    • this is a great idea, it should be pretty easy to get 1000 referrals in that period of time.
    • Woah... I love the concept of this referral week to bring up the businesses that might just turn out to be multi-million dollar businesses with little referral marketing.

Now i am thinking which business can I promote? Hmmm... I think i know, going to make an entry. The week isnt over is it?
