Social Media is key to the future of the internet, and one can expect more and more services like Radian6 to pop up, mainly to service the corporate and money'd sectors, whilst more and more free services are bound to come into being as well.

As far as online reputation management is concerned, Andy Beal from Marketing Pilgrim has a cool paid service called Trackur, which also seems to be quite effective.

Hi John,

Thanks so much for having me on. Enjoyed our chat very much, and would love to do it again sometime, online or off.

There are so many social media issues to discuss that are not only relevant, but rapidly evolving. It's fantastic to be working with colleagues like you in this space to further the discussion, and keep tackling the hard questions of ROI, scale, risks, and the "what next" of social media as it relates to small business.

Thanks again, and thanks to your readers for giving it a listen.

Cheers,
Amber

@John - hate to focus too much on the negative - but, "Although it is difficult to calculate the positive ROI of social media participation, it's not hard to calculate the potential damage . . ." is so true.

The speed of acceleration on the web cannot be overestimated and require an immediate response to preclude serious brand damage.

Without a social media strategy that includes an examination of comments on the web, you risk having your brand maligned and irreparably damaged. In the absence of a clarifying voice offering your company's perspective, you risk having anonymous commentators define your company.

Although it is difficult to calculate the positive ROI of social media participation, it's not hard to calculate the potential damage of a smear campaign allowed to fester because of your lack of awareness and response.

If you want a free tool that complements Google Alerts well I'd recommend your readers check out BackType. I find http://www.backtype.com/ is a great resource for managing your reputation and brand *within* comments and other areas that typical monitoring tools don't catch.

I love Google Alerts for example but they don't catch the text in blog comments which is often where the richest positive and negative feedback is found! Teaming up Google Alerts and BackType is a killer free solution.

And no, I'm not in any way affiliated with BackType and this is not an ad. Cheers! :-)
