My Small Business Economic Stimulus Wish List

Today on the AMEX OpenForum I wrote a post about what I think the Obama Stimulus package should contain to address the needs of small business. Small business is the economic engine that will pull us out of this recession – let’s put some oil in the engine!

1) Really fund the SBDCs and SCORE
2) Fix the Uncle Louie problem along with the banks – tax credits for small investment
3) Want to create jobs? – I have simple solution
4) Fix health care – and watch out for the entrepreneurial explosion

  2. Cap Gains Tax Cut -- Duh
  3. Tax Deduction for personal health ins. premiums and all health care expenses.
  3a. Don't require Private insurance to cover military injury care (it will just raise insurance rates)
  4. Moratorium on new Regs for businesses w/less than 50 employees.

  Thank you, John. I tweeted you after the President's press conference on Monday. I still don't have any answers, but yours make more sense than most. I think the Uncle Louie and the Cash for New Hires are fantastic. Can you imagine how much cash would be unlocked if someone could get tax credits for investing in small biz vs the stock mkt? Enormous. If you gave me $100,000 to create a new position, I wouldn't hesitate. The job market would explode.

  I wish that small business people were paying attention to some of the tax benefits of the stimulus package as you pointed out, the accelerated depreciation of equipment and the ability to carry back net operating losses as far back as five years.
  
  I also agree that they should fund the small business technical assistance providers, like score and the SBDCs. They also need to nail down a set of standards that define what technical assistance is so that these providers can all be measured by the same yard stick.

  So right. Small business is the largest driver of our economy. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 3.8 million companies were small companies with fewer than 10 workers, and they employed 12.4 million people, which is about 11 percent of the private sector work force.
