  • Small Business Podcasting Sadly Underutilized

    Share

micThe hype over this thing called podcasting tipped long ago. So much so that you either don’t hear much about it anymore in the media or you hear that it’s so last year. While it’s true, the bloom of newness is off the podcasting rose, the usefulness as a marketing tool for the small business is better than ever.

Looking at the traditional podcast format, much like a radio show hosted by a passionate host, a lot of small business folks miss the potential for their business. Let me break down what podcasting is from a marketing point of view. It’s the use of simple tools to create multi-media content, engage prospects and customers alike, and open doors to strategic partners like never before. If any of those things sound like useful objectives, then podcasting is for you. (I won’t even mention the possibilities for using this approach to create products.)

Don’t get hung up on the radio show thing so much as on the ability to easily create great content.

Here’s how I would suggest you think about podcasting.

    • A great way to feature the stories of your best customer – interview your customers and post their stories for prospects to hear. It doesn’t matter if you have a large audience for your podcast, your customers will dig the attention and you’ll get content on the fly.
    • A great way to open doors – when you contact an author, industry leader, or expert of any kind with the offer to interview and feature them on your podcast, you’ll be amazed at the quality of guest you can secure and then the quality of content and exposure that can bring. If you run a print shop in the middle of Des Moines Iowa you can offer your customers and prospects access to the leading design, print and color experts from around the world – would that be valuable?
    • A great way to build and solidify your strategic network – By routinely interviewing the members of your network of partners that you would like your customers to meet you can build a stronger network and make referrals to that network more easily because of the focus you can bring with an interview and audio content featured on the partner section of your site.
    • A great competitive advantage – Does your competitor have an interview with the current president of your trade association on their site?
    • Two for one – hold live web conferences using either interviews or presentations, record and viola, podcast episode.

Can you see how these examples might make this thing called podcasting a killer small business tool? Again, forget what it’s called, focus on the practical uses.

A few tools to get you started

    • Good mic – I use a Blue Snowball USB mic
    • Audio editing software – I use Garage Band on a Mac
    • Audio hosting service – I use Libsyn
    • Phone interviews? – I use SkypeIn with a real phone number and Call Recorder software
    • WordPress plugin – Podcasting
    • WordPress Blog – use to host your show episodes and RSS feed so people can get your audio via iTunes
    • Complete Internet Radio Show – BlogTalkRadio

You can take this as far and as full featured as you like, but just adding basic audio interviews and recording via podcasting is an easy way to ramp up the content creation machine.

    • I just added the podcast plugin to my wordpress site. Went through the setting. Now what?? Do I upload a file to iTunes and link back to feed address I was given when setting up plugin?

Thanks for all you great advice!
    • Thanks John. I haven't considered Podcasting too much, but this gives me some practical advice that I can work with. We currently feature customers once a week on our blog, but I think an interview would be great. I also like the concept of having a platform and a reason to invite quality people to discuss a topic relevant to your target market.
    • I have known about podcasting for a very long while, though I've understood what it actually was for a much shorter period of time.

Using podcasting on a local level is an idea that immediately jumped into my mind as I read through your post. For instance, a real estate investor might be able to quickly dominate his market and become the go-to guy (for distressed sellers and home buyers) by simply offering valuable content via a weekly podcast.

I'll be chewing on that one. Thanks!
    • As someone who has created and distributed podcasts for 4 years, in association with writing blog articles and my ezine I can not think of may ways that I would have been able to attract so many leads and connect with so many thought leaders without podcasting.

Some of my podcasts from 4 years ago still get downloaded every month.

Podcasting also takes the risk out of people hiring you as a speaker, presenter or trainer as they have the opportunity to hear you.

One underused way of using podcasts is podcasting internally within the corporation for larget companies for both employee engagement and training.

A great place to start is definitely Blog Talk Radio as providing you have a topic you want to speak about you can podcast without worrying about the technology.

An alternative way of publishing is the Blubrry plugin which I understand has had great reviews though is not something I have used - I know many people have problems with PodPress.
    • Upfront: I do social media work for Blubrry.

Internal podcasting is one of those ideas that hasn't taken off as some would have hoped, but the idea is sound. It's an easy way to communicate to everyone in an organization. Granted there are some issues with potential information leaks, but it would work as a great motivational tool or replacement for an internal newsletter.

The podcasting plugin you're talking about is PowerPress and it is available for the WordPress blogging platform. It's a super easy way to add podcasting to your WordPress blog.
    • I would assume John, that your podcast is your number 2 lead generator outside of your blog. You have a great one! But quit talking about it!

Podcasting is such a great form of communication and practically free with all the resources available. I hope it stays underutilized giving me a slight advantage over those who choose not to use this wonderful tool!:)
    • Just a different thought on this, maybe podcasting never took off because not enough people were listening.

I, for one, don't like videos or podcasts. I'd rather browse through a written page than have to sit and listen to all the content. I'm guessing others feel the same and, unless they tend to be the personality type that wants to digest every bit of information before making a decision (most don't) they won't take the time to listen to things like customer interviews and such.
    • John, thanks for affirming something I believe, that podcasting was indeed an underutilized, under-appreciated form of marketing. Considering I'm devoting an entire chapter to it in my upcoming book, I'm especially grateful. It is most definitely a tool small businesses should be using.
    • The Blue Snowball is an excellent choice. This mic will give you such a clean sound when asking those industry specif experts the tough questions. I like the idea of podcasting. Opens a lot of doors and allows listeners to hear first hand your in depth knowledge
    • Good encouragement to go for another piece of added depth on our blogs and websites. It takes guts to ask for an interview, but I have found that asking is often all it takes. A lot of "big wigs" like to give back and will often help you even if your blog is still small, if they like your content!
    • If you are unaware of small business then this is the best article where u get much info and its helpful too.
Thanks for sharing!... Hope it works who are beginners...
