  • The Light Bulb Moment for Many on Twitter

Anyone who is an active twitter user may not remember the day that twitter started to finally make sense and you may certainly look at this post as rather simple, and it is, but . . .

I come across folks that are new to twitter or have been on twitter for months and still don’t get why people are so caught up. By the way, a little disclaimer here – I for one am an active twitter user and I see ROI, but it’s just another tool and is not for everyone – more on that this week.

The light bulb moment I’ve witnessed time and time again when I speak is when I show people the ways you can filter, aggregate, follow, and automate searches with third party tools like tweetdeck or tweetie.

Here’s a very simple introduction to how I have tweetdeck set-up on my laptop. It’s always evolving, but this is the starting point that might be enough to take away the mystery of using twitter for someone trying to wade in. (You might also check out my Twitter for Business ebook.)

Have a look at this post on using advanced twitter search to for some more tips.

    • I love the brief video tutorial. I learn more visually and this really brings the post to life.

What do you use to capture your screen?
    • John Jantsch
@Todd, yes I think a lot of people learn this way, makes a good case for us marketers formatting our stuff in multiple ways.

This is a capture using ScreenFlowPro with zero editing.
    • Good idea John to show the visual and nice post. I think it is a great first step for anyone starting.

One quick mention - you said there are Mac and PC versions. True, but if Adobe AIR will run on your computer, you can use Tweetdeck.

I'm using Ubuntu 8.10 and it works great since there is an AIR version for linux. Yes, it's a PC, but some may think they need Windows or Mac - they don't.

      Great video. Very useful.
    • Excellent vid and I agree with your point that being able to easily see the searches that are important to you makes twitter/tweetdeck most valuable indeed.
    • John, I agree the future of Twitter is going to be on aggregating these feeds and really organizing all this information. I'm sure there is no way you can keep up with all the tweets you get, and certainly can't read all the people you follow.

Twitter search columns pickup most of the tweets that I actually want to read--and could keep me busy networking for hours!
    • John, this video is truly helpful. I am an enthusiastic user of Tweetdeck and know these tools are going to be totally necessary if people want to be able to have USEFUL social media interactions instead of being totally overwhelmed. Thanks for the video ... people new to social media always need a place to get their toes wet before diving into the deep end.
    • WOW what a powerful free little tool! Really glad i found you off of the Top 50 Marketing blogs of 2009 congrats on that as well.
    • Thanks for the great suggestion with TweetDeck. I started to use twitter only about a month ago, and TweetDeck is really making it easy for me to see and search all the different tweets that I need to be aware off. Great time saving tool.
    • I'm still waiting for my light bulb moment but I do like the tweetdeck concept for keeping track of what is being said about you...if anything! Thanks for the idea on the tool.
    • Thanks for the video, I understand the impact, but have been struggling with setting up tweetdeck to work with the way I want to follow conversations and interact.
    • Twitter is awesome when you do have the moment of clarity. Good post on the tools like Tweetdeck.
    • Tweetdeck was my light bulb moment. When tweetdeck was down for a day or 2 I don't think I used twitter because I can't stand the site now.

It really makes twitter so useful for business.
    • This was very useful. It still seems somewhat overpowering but I like the tweetdeck look and feel - everything on one page, all at my fingertips. I'll check this out some more. thanks.
    • I love Tweet Deck by the way, so much easier and more fun than anything else.

I just wanted to comment on what you said: "It's just another tool and not for everyone."

That's so simple and so true.

There are so many "social media experts" out there telling people how they HAVE TO be on Twitter because it's the latest "big thing." But I feel that when used as an ad blasting or affiliate link posting tool, you're risking serious and unrepairable damage to your reputation.

Many of the people you'll end up pissing off are going to be there on Facebook, My Space, wherever else you try to pull a similar stunt.

Thanks for such a great post!
    • Thanks for the video, just downloade the deck, now to learn it and set it up.
    • Thanks for posting this. Great stuff. I uninstalled Tweetdeck for the reasons others have noted above. This article and video might get me to reopen the can of worms.
