  • SEO Is Not Really That Complicated

    Share

LotusJumpSo, I know this post will draw the ire of some SEO folks, but that’s alright, some need their ire drawn. SEO can be a complex science and there are those, Aaron Wall and Lee Odden come to mind immediately, that have much to add to the field of SEO when it comes to highly sophisticated implementations.

In my experience however, the typical small business need only focus on three things to greatly improve their chances for showing up in search results for key phases. (There are many, many things that can be done, but get your head around these three first.)

    1) Consistently create education based content that is optimized for important keyword phrases – another way of saying this might be write lots of useful information in blog posts and work the phrases that people might use searching for your business or the problems you solve in the title of the posts.

    2) Practice good HTML – I won’t go into a tutorial on the technical aspects of HTML coding, (if you want to learn here’s a great HTML site) but simple things like smart use of page title, meta description, alt image descriptions, heading and subheading (h1, h2) attributes, and anchor text in links is important – make sure you or your designer use them effectively.

    3) Relevant links back to your site – search engines place a very high level of importance on this factor because they figure you like your site and will tell them how great it is no matter what, but if another site, particularly one they’ve already determined to be useful, likes your site enough to link to it and gives clues about how and why it’s good, then that’s another story. In fact, don’t waste your time, and please don’t waste any money, submitting your site to the search engines, they no longer care. Get another site to link to your site and the search engines will take note.

The subject of backlinks has a long and sordid history in the world of SEO because it’s the place so many what are called “black hat” SEO folks go to get rankings in ways that the search engines eventually ban. The search engines don’t really want you to buy links-that’s not very authentic, they get nervous when you get hundreds of links in a day – that’s not really natural unless you have a long history of it, what they do want is for you to acquire links from sites that also produce lots of useful content and are related to what your site is about.

There are many ways to accomplish the building of backlinks and there are very legitimate companies out there that can do it for you as well. Today, I would also like to greatly recommend a service called LotusJump for those who would like to increase their backlinks naturally and systematically for a fairly low cost.

Disclosure: LotusJump is a Duct Tape Marketing Coach Network strategic partner and we do have an affiliate arrangement with them, but as I hope you’ve gathered, the only folks on that list are companies and services that I use and believe in fully.

The way LotusJump works is that you sign-up your URL and choose a number of keyword phrases you would like to optimize backlinks for (3 or 10 depending on the $24 or $49 mo plan). Then LotusJump delivers a steady stream of link building tasks to help build buzz, get competive backlinks, submit content, social media links and directories that all make sense for your industry or chosen keywords. The list of tasks is not perfect, there are some that don’t always make sense and some that you’ve already done, but because the list is exhaustive and updates frequently you’ve always got lots to do. As I said, this approach isn’t perfect, but what I love is the exact step-by-step task list that just about anyone in your organization can work on. You can put in a few minutes a day and know you are making some long-term headway. (New features still in beta will also help give tasks for on page elements addressed in step 2 above.)

I had a chance to interview LotusJump’s Tom McConnon for the this episode of the Duct Tape Marketing podcast. Have listen as we discuss general SEO topics and specific LotusJump features. (Click to listen or right click and Save As to download.)

    • True, SEO isn't that complicated. Painting your own house isn't either. And most small business owners I know don't have the time or desire to paint their own homes.

I think this is spot on, John. In many cases, the term SEO gets used as a way to bully small businesses into signing up for a service they don't need. The emphasis should always be on building a site that serves its purpose well. Some basic SEO steps can be included in building the site itself - which is like getting the foundation right for a building - but if the doors aren't in the right place, the decor stinks, and the rooms are uncomfortable, all the fiddling with the bathroom fittings won't make the place habitable. (I think I just bludgeoned a metaphor to death!)
    • Thanks and bludgeoning is ok - there is so much that can be done, but take the foundational steps first as you say.

The only thing I would ad is having at least a basic understanding of what your relevant keywords are and how people are using them to search on your topics. For example, one of my website clients is a holistic nurse using body mind spirit practices. In her field the words are lumped together as one word, but after a quick look using google's tool, that's not how people are searching. We updated her keywords to reflect that.
    • Very true - this is a key first step to even thinking about your web presence and could be added here, but I make a case for it coming before this as a topic of discussion in the strategy phase of business.

My company uses LotusJump like crazy, and we love it. We've been tracking our rankings for the 3 months or so that we've been using it, and it has moved us up for a few hundred keywords. (We have more than 10 because we're a slightly bigger company than some that probably use it right now.) We have receptionists working on buzz tasks when they have down time, and then more experienced writers work on some of the content-building tasks. It's worked really well and we love the guys over at LotusJump for being so helpful.
    • wow - huge testimonial - does LotusJump know your story :) I bet they would. My favorite point is the fact that you have people throughout your org working on tasks that don't really have a need to plug into the big picture.

It's just another round of the latest tricks. I normally appreciate most everything you contribute, but this isn't very long term effective advice.
    • Rick - not sure if your read the same thing I wrote - this isn't the latest or tricks - this is what's always worked and it's anti-tricks. This is the absolutely long term effective, sorry you couldn't appreciate it.
    • That's what I've found to be true for my startups and micros. There are a couple of mistakes people commonly make. They "fix" their websites and in doing so remove links without checking their traffic logs. That removes search capital those links have accrued. They also think of "content" as anything that fills up a page. When it comes to SEO, content = text. You can address SEO in Flash, video, and graphics, but, for the most part, you have to think about the text that's included on the page. Businesses and their keywords are being driven deeper into niches so if the site is well constructed, that really is about all that can be done.

Has anyone tried to build and startup a new site for affiliate marketing? I looked into affiliated marketing and found a company http://abcdesignstudio.com and they provided free marketing advice located here http://abcdesignstudio.com/essentials/marketing.shtml
I followed their tips on their website and started earning money on my websites right away!
    • Matt Cutts said it and I've seen it, HTML coding does nothing at all for SEO. This is the biggest myth around perpetuated by the lame who will cling to anything to claim competitive advantage and higher costs to consumers. Then to... if those who made these claims had a clue.. they'd be real SEO's not web designers claiming to be SEO's!
    • Terry - Matt Cutts is a tool, I mean what does he know about SEO, oh wait, that's not true - here's an interview I did with him not too terribly long ago where we discuss the subject of HTML and SEO in great depth. Have a listen as I'm pretty sure he's clear on the impact it has. - http://media.libsyn.com/media/ducttape/MattCutt...

There certainly are some myths - keyword tag is useless, but there's plenty of valid reasons as well.

To your last point are you suggesting being an SEO would somehow be on a higher order than a web designer? I don't know as I claim to be neither, all I cling to is the massive results I've achieved doing precisely the steps outlined above.
    • Thanks again for the interview John. We're definitely pleased with the success Overstock Drugstore is seeing with their custom, high keyword, ecommerce account.

@corrinda -- Totally agree. We're building some keyword research into the tool to help people with effective KW selection. In the mean time, we're helping people directly via support, offering a free setup call to help them get started on the right foot.
    • I agree on the items. Competition is usually low for a small business trying to get top rankings for their local market.
    • Article was helpful, John. Wow, I have to say, I'm thoroughly impressed at LotusJump's offerings. I have several friends and family that have partnered w/ SEO shops paying orders of magnitude more $. I am 100% going to get in touch w/ them once my site is up. Amazing.
    • It looks like an interesting service, but I really would like to see a "Free Trial" before I give my credit card number.

    • I like you for using the title to draw me looking for a fight. :) But you make excellent points here. SEO - while time consuming - is not rocket science. The main point to successful SEO is having a plan and sticking to it - understanding your three main points is key. The one thing I would add is that assessment and analysis can be crucial to success as well. Good stuff, thanks!

John, Thanks for all your great instructions. I really like your podcast, it is informative and always spot on. It seems that every time I have a question, or start researching something, your next podcast tackles that topic. I am a new business owner, a year and and a half on my own, and me and my business partner are just about to finish a Duct Tape Marketing class here in Utah. It has been great. SEO has been a thing I have struggled with, thanks for your insights on the subject.

Enough with the fluff, now just a comment on your podcasts, because I recently listened to the "Who's got your back" Podcast I am feeling that to not tell someone when they see a mistake is not being a friend, I can hear you breathing on the podcasts. I find it a bit distraction for me.

Thanks again for all you are doing, Love your stuff.
      Matt
    • John - Couldn't agree more with your theory. In the grand scheme of things there are a lot of things you can do SEO-wise to optimize your website. But at the very least, spend your time getting the fundamentals right.

I'm a huge believer in sound content strategy. If you can crank out quality content on a consistent basis then the fruits of SEO (links and traffic) should follow.

The one thing I'd caution is people thinking SEO is easy. Sure, there's a lot you can do yourself, but it takes a serious commitment.
    • Ami
Nice post. Getting high quality backlinks can be a bit of a task though. I use pillar articles and they seem to help
    • Agreed. I also think it's important to analyze who your target audience is, and what searches, etc. are drawing them to your site. This can help focus your content and link building efforts.
    • Search engine optimization is one of the easiest things a small business can do to get free advertising from the search engines.
    • sarahnelson
      Hi John,

Great Post. I could not get the html link to work.

      Sarah
    • You are right to some degree, general SEO isn't difficult just very time consuming, if you don't know what you are doing, and there's a lot of misinformation out there about it. But then you are talking to internet savvy people, not the average business owner, who is interested in their business, and not so much in the internet.

As an example I recently "Meet" emailed someone that owns a website business, nice site, he has also taken up writing articles, and submitting the articles to a popular article banks as an SEO technique to get links to his business website.

He has written over 1200 very good articles, ideal for use on blogs and in newsletters etc. he's done that part right, He's been doing this for over 2 years.

However looking at his google analytics the only change to visitors to his site, come from the link in his bio at the article site, about 100 visitors a month, and of those visitors, the bounce rate is just over 94%.

However visitors coming from search engines have stayed about the same over the past 5 years. Sure there's some natural increase, but nothing noticeable. Not considering the time this guy has put in, writing his articles on the same topic as his business website.
