You are right to some degree, general SEO isn't difficult just very time consuming, if you don't know what you are doing, and there's a lot of misinformation out there about it. But then you are talking to internet savvy people, not the average business owner, who is interested in their business, and not so much in the internet.

As an example I recently "Meet" emailed someone that owns a website business, nice site, he has also taken up writing articles, and submitting the articles to a popular article banks as an SEO technique to get links to his business website.

He has written over 1200 very good articles, ideal for use on blogs and in newsletters etc. he's done that part right, He's been doing this for over 2 years.

However looking at his google analytics the only change to visitors to his site, come from the link in his bio at the article site, about 100 visitors a month, and of those visitors, the bounce rate is just over 94%.

However visitors coming from search engines have stayed about the same over the past 5 years. Sure there's some natural increase, but nothing noticeable. Not considering the time this guy has put in, writing his articles on the same topic as his business website.

Lynny

True, SEO isn't that complicated. Painting your own house isn't either. And most small business owners I know don't have the time or desire to paint their own homes.

Search engine optimization is one of the easiest things a small business can do to get free advertising from the search engines.

Agreed. I also think it's important to analyze who your target audience is, and what searches, etc. are drawing them to your site. This can help focus your content and link building efforts.

Nice post. Getting high quality backlinks can be a bit of a task though. I use pillar articles and they seem to help

John - Couldn't agree more with your theory. In the grand scheme of things there are a lot of things you can do SEO-wise to optimize your website. But at the very least, spend your time getting the fundamentals right.

I'm a huge believer in sound content strategy. If you can crank out quality content on a consistent basis then the fruits of SEO (links and traffic) should follow.

The one thing I'd caution is people thinking SEO is easy. Sure, there's a lot you can do yourself, but it takes a serious commitment.
