The Truth About What Motivates Us

Dan Pink has a new book coming out at the end of the year – Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us – that may help people rethink the entire notion of the carrot and stick approach to motivating and rewarding employees. Seems that autonomy is a much greater motivator than we understand.

Dan will be a guest on an upcoming episode of the Duct Tape Marketing but this past summer he presented the central theme of his book durting a TED Talk. The 18 minute clip below is worth watching over and over again. (Dan’s a great presenter and this video could be used to teach how to present.)

Thanks for the informative and insightful video, John. You have done it again as always. Keep on sharing those inputs!
  • Great observation about how these findings perhaps explain why entrepreneurs are often able to achieve what corporations can't. So many successful entrepreneurs live by the philosophy that if you focus on doing right by your customers, the profits will follow naturally. Dan Pink's findings support this--if your focus is on the profits, there will be less focus on satisfying your customers.
  • Man, so true - entrepreneurs practice autonomy unconsciously I think
  • Thank you for sharing this incredibly provocative speech. Dan Pink's findings are a true revelation that every business owner or executive needs to know about.
  • Make sure you come back and listen to my interview with them

Thank you so much for this informative video! The example of Wiki vs. Encarta was an eye opener. But as great as his example are, I don't see a move in Corporate America towards such a model. On the other hand, perhaps this is the reason why entrepreneurs are successful... they work for themselves, they have the flexibility necessary for creative outside-the-box thinking, and the satisfaction that comes with delivering a successful presentation/product/service is priceless. Thoughts?
  • Yes I love that example - Wikipedia has lots of lessons in it I think
