  • Twitter and LinkedIn Finally Sync Up

LinkedIn and Twitter announced an integration today that should be interesting.

Starting sometime today, LinkedIn users can automatically feed their Twitter status updates to their LinkedIn status updates. While LinkedIn’s status update feature is right there for all to use, my experience is that people don’t use it nearly as much as they should – or certainly not like Twitter. (Even though LinkedIn has more members than Twitter.) This should be a real shot in the arm to LinkedIn from an exposure standpoint, but it may shake things up a bit too as the volume of status updates skyrockets.

The partnership is significant for another reason. I think this update is a further move towards positioning Twitter as the central content distribution hub for business. Facebook Fan Pages now offer easy Twitter integration and Bing and Google have established official ties with Twitter as well.

The ability to cross post goes both ways.

    On LinkedIn

You can post from LinkedIn status and have it update twitter or the other way around. On LinkedIn you will change some setting and then click the Twitter box to have a LinkedIn status update post to Twitter.

    On Twitter

The Twitter integration works very much like the popular Selective Twitter App for Facebook, when you post on Twitter and add the hashtag #li or #in the twitter update will also post to LinkedIn.

Here’s the update announcement from the LinkedIn blog: LinkedIn works with Twitter, and vice versa

Just read your post and shared on Twitter. Timely.
    • I wonder if this is related to something I noticed last night in the LinkedIn 'groups' section. Click into a group's discussion area, and there's a place where you can "follow John" to see all the places he adds new discussion questions.
    • We could already update LinkedIn status via Ping.fm. However, I've seen movement (site updates) by LinkedIn to center the Status function. This new, more formal integration, should draw many execs into the conversation who may have formerly been against the concept of Twitter.

      That's a good thing.
    • It is about time that these two went together. As you said, the Linkedin status rarely gets used so this partnership should help people spread the word with whichever tools they are comfortable.
    • Thank you for this! I signed up for Ping.fm but since I primarily use LinkedIn and Twitter, this will eliminate a step when I do want to share across both platforms.

Although there are many people who tweet, it seems like the Facebook community is still more popular. So it would be great if you could do the same with Facebook statuses, just add a hash tag at the end if you wanted it to update your LinkedIn status.

The online world does seem to be making Twitter the go to place for .... everything doesn't it. It will be interesting to see if members start using the status update feature more now.

Man, all of this content and update statuses are getting to be a bit too much. Don't you think? As a developer of open-source web 2.0 websites, I use many of the api's, especially twitter and facebook, to pull in activity streams on customer websites. LOL, it seems at time that all of this is one big circle. Thanmks for the post.
    • Thanks for the update John. There is a product called MePing which has achieved this but not in the formal way this appears to have now happened

    • Yes and Ping.fm allows this as well, but the majority of small biz folks will never find or use those tools. This has implications way beyond you and me as now millions of non techie folks will be exposed in a tool they already use.
    • This is an awesome news for everyone, the best part of social media comes with synching them in together. It's easier now to share thoughts and ideas to 2 more social sites at the same time.
    • I love this. A decent percentage of CloudProfile users are individuals (the bulk are small businesses) who are using it as a kind of social and conversational hub. In those scenarios we’ve still seen Twitter and Facebook as the primary mechanisms for ongoing social discovery and engagement, but we do get requests for LinkedIn integration. It’s usually for those users that are either looking for a job or using LinkedIn groups for professional networking. By opening up the platform to Twitter, our users can now talk in one spot for either short or long updates and push all the way through and keep their LinkedIn profile “alive”.

The screencast of how to set it up is embarassingly simple – http://bit.ly/413jHD.

Thank you to Twitter and LinkedIn for making this happen.
    • That's good news for a minor change.
It's definitely a win-win situation for both of these social network giants.
    • Good to see some spice flavor for Linkedin. Else my Linkedin status was not updated from long

This is great to hear. I've been using twitterfeed and ping.fm to update my status on Twitter and LinkedIn from my blog posts. Keep thinking I should be taking part in both more often - this should help.
    • A very timely and efficient way to send status updates through both Linked In and Twitter. I think it will allow people to get comfortable with both sites while generating popularity to their Twitter and Linked In pages.
