  • Blogging – It’s Not Just For Breakfast Anymore

    Google Buzz

You know I’m a huge fan of blogs for small business and an equally big supporter of the WordPress blogging platform.

The wide adoption of WordPress is aided greatly by the fact that its open source architecture means that outside developers can create add-ons to extend the basic functionality.

So, now you can think outside of the blog. WordPress, developed as blog software, is, through various plugins, capable of supporting full web sites, membership sites, e commerce premium content management and multi-author publications with ease.

For this week’s AMEX Open Forum column I introduce 10 Ways to Make WordPress More Useful – go check it out.

    • I love AMEX OpenForum series. These are great articles and specific how-to's. Thanks for the pointer and being in the great group AMEX has assembled over there.

I found one plug-in specifically that I was wondering if something like it might exist (for a current project). Thank you.
    • Hey Bill - I think the AMEX series will continue to get bigger - lots of cool things planned there for next year - what plugin did you find useful?
    • Wishlist Member. I have a concept for a membership site, but was wondering if there was an easy way to manage that on a Wordpress platform. Then BAM! up pops your post. Thanks for accelerating my research!
    • It's a great tool, great support folks too - I am using it on DucttapeU.com and love some of the features.
    • Recently helped a janitorial company develop a website for next to nothing. There are so features that can be integrated. I wish that more small businesses were aware of it!!!
    • I love the name!
    • Definitely. My new webiste was actually designed to use Wordpress as the Content Management System. Even though the site is developed using XHTML, PHP and CSS, I'm able to very easily manage the site on my own and that makes my life so much easier.
    • Blogging certainly just isn't for breakfast - it's a full time job (and more) for some people!

People always ask me what is the better blogging platform - blogger or wordpress. I say wordpress from the start most times, but blogger is great for the absolute newbie say if you want to test the waters of blogging go for blogger - if you survive and are still going on with your blog after 1-2 months change to wordpress :)
    • Nice choice of Disqus for comments. Multi-threaded conversations and making commenting easier & more fun equals a killer system. This is slightly off topic but Deborah & Denver SEO mentioned Wordpress for SEO.

Totally agree! One of my favorite plugins for that is All In One SEO Pack. Allows for a lot of customization and overall greatness ;-)
    • Mike and don't forget the Google Sitemaps Plugin as well
    • Yes, most definitely! Had that one since the beginning
    • Wordpress offers many very useful plug-ins. Have had great luck using it for SEO purposes!

The most difficult part is encouraging clients to use the platform consistently. Writing can be difficult - especially when it comes to finding time to do it well.
    • There's no question in my mind, Wordpress is one of the best tools a small business can use. It's one of the best ways to get a website up inexpensively. Not only that, but the SEO benefits are priceless.
    • Sure beats the $10,000 option!
