Real Time is Big Time

In this week’s article for AMEX OpenForum I wrote what I see as 5 Trends That Will Shape Small Business in 2010 – #1 on the list was – Real time is big time

At some point in 2010, I wrote, all search results will consist of real-time information, scores, reviews, tweets and all, right there and up to the minute. We’re addicted to up to the minute connection and we want more. It’s kind of like the Meryl Streep line in Postcards from the Edge, “Instant gratification isn’t fast enough.â€

Then Google goes and formalizes the long awaited addition of real-time search results into the mainstream including updates from Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, FriendFeed, Jaiku and Identi.ca. Here’s the official Google announcement: Relevance meets the real-time web

The video below shows how it works

In the coming year there will a lot of emphasis instant. Google Wave will eventually introduce people to real-time collaboration.

So what does it mean for the small business owner? Social media and search, both important lead generation and awareness plays, have been in a serious relationship for some time, but now they’re getting married. You better make sure your brand is on the guest list.

Strategic social media participation and monitoring in real time is a required skill in the new world of marketing.

Mashable's CEO Cashmore wrote an article about this at cnn.com this past week. He says it's all part of the "dopamine loop" that I wrote about at my blog post: Dopamine Makes You Addicted To Seeking Information (http://bit.ly/28me8d), so I agree, this is bound to be big and our brains will make it so!
  • The more we've been working in social media marketing, the more I've come to a realization that people are losing out if they omit search from their marketing strategy. I recently wrote a post about this in light of the new Google Personalized Search (that everyone is a part of, whether they like it or not!): http://bit.ly/7Kxdhh.

I love that quote about the marriage and guest list, btw.
  • So what does that mean for your business? That the time you are spending engaging with your clients/public is now going to be in the spot light. You have been saying good, encouraging, helpful, informative things on your twitter, right? Of course you have! So now when someone types in a keyword such as "bike repair", Mike's Bikerepair twitter account will be streaming in to the front page of Google. I will see all the helpful and courteous dialogue going on at Mike's and want to take my bike to Mike.

John's Bikerepair uses his 2.0 life to discuss how good his cereal is, so we'll know to call him for advice about cereal and Mike to fix our bike.

Remember three things about real time search results:

  • I prefer oatmeal, but Amen to that - it's kind of like the new mantra - The which happens in Vegas, stays on YouTube
  • same here. Good post, liked that you took the time to make your own video for your post. That alone made me put you in my google reader.

Thanks for making content instead of just passing it along!

  • Kind of like making my own videos - I end up using them in other places that way.
  • I feel like all of us marketing bloggers have been talking about how important it is to think about SEO as more than just metadata, and that a comprehensive inbound marketing strategy which combines blogging, SEO and social media is critical to being successful today, and especially in the future. Well, as this post indicates, the future is now, and if you still think your website will perform well for SEO without an ongoing content and social media strategy, you're crazy! Hopefully the enlightened folks that read this blog are on top of it and working to grow their social media presence so they continue to have top website grades and get results.
  • Hey thanks Mike - it would just be piling on if I tried to explain the ways I agree with you.
