A Beautiful Way to Read More Blogs

If you use an RSS reader to subscribe to and read blogs (and you should) then you know what a great tool it can be to keep you up to date, well-read and inspired.

I’ve used the free Google Reader tool for a long time and love it’s simplicity. However, a reader of this blog (Rob Kirby) pointed out a very cool tool called Feedly that takes my subscriptions and creates a much better looking magazine like interface. To me better looking translates into more useful when it comes to scanning a hundred blogs or so. Feedly immediately brought all of my feeds and organization folders over from Google so set-up was instantaneous.

But that’s just the beginning. Feedly is a Firefox add-on that functions using my Google Reader account so all my Feedly activity is still saved to Google Reader. Adding blog subscriptions as simple as a click, but I can also pages I find, video, images, anything I want to bookmark and organize. I can share and email articles I find and the tool analyzes the content I seem to like and gently suggests where I might find more.

The two images below give you comparison views of Google Reader and Feedly (Click to enlarge)

John I love it when we have more options and solutions. I get it they are not all gonna be fore veryone. So I will be doing something with google reader and feedly test it and report back onb my blog what I liked and didn't like.
  • Love to hear your thoughts on this
  • netvibes.com is another nice alternative.
  • Thanks for posting this! This is really helpful especially because I'm such visual person - it gives me a more visual way to see my content. I've wanted something like this for a while, but just haven't looked into it. Thanks for the doing the work for me! :)
  • Hey Cassie, I am also a visual person and I am using favit.com as a reader. It has 3 distinct ways to view items, lists, and you can easily send them to twitter and Facebook as it has these 2 services integrated. :)
  • John,
I have tried Feedly and I just don't find it to be as fast and efficient as Google Reader. I'm probably not a typical reader; I have about 250 sites in my reader. GR's tagging, email, twitter, and other integration makes it my best tool for information consumption and organization.
Still for people with a smaller list, Feedly might be better. Nice article.
    Chris
  • I think you are right Feedly may not work for a power reader, but I still really like the presentation of the page, I just find it more pleasing, which makes reading more pleasing.
  • Thanks John. Your suggestions quite often hit the spot.

I tried Feedly in hopes of it improving my RSS reading, but it really did not do that. I'm not sure where I saw the recommendation, but what has helped is changing the way I use Google Reader.

I now go to the All Items view, scan the subjects and Star the ones that I want to read (and being sure not to be tempted to read something right then) . I then Mark All as Read, and then select only Starred items to actually read posts. This has made feed reading much more manageable, and I no longer even bother to categorize my feeds. I highly recommend this method.

Feedfly looks nice. I use Pageflakes and like it.

Hi John I am really enjoying the podcast! Thanx
  • Anything that crams more meaning into my reading time is worth a try
  • I'm going to give this a try, John. Currently using Chrome browser, but this may be a reason to return to Firefox??? (First, I'm going to check, though, to see if it's available for Chrome!)
  • Just checked, and it is available for Google Chrome browser, here's the link if anybody would like to try -https://chrome.google.com/extensions/detail/ndhinffkekpekljifjkkkkkhopnjodja
