For this week’s post at AMEX OPENForum I outlined 5 Ways That Sales People Can Benefit From Using Social Media

Social media tools are incredible for engagement, amplification, nurturing and deepening relationships – all the stuff that sales is supposed to do. In fact, social media tools are probably more useful in the hands of the right salesperson than the entire marketing department.

    • Social Media is a great place to interact with people. People like to socialize and to keep up with what is happening in the world. It is a great place for people and businesses to share links. It is a place for businesses to promote their brand names and manage their reputations. But it is not a good place for direct sales.
    • Social media sites are really big help to small time businessmen like me. well, i mean i can post my links there and people will start coming to my website. That is great for me already!
    • Being a marketer myself I always encourage my clients to use social media to expose their business. What I would not like to see, however, is for social media to be overtaken with nothing but sales messages. In my view that will destroy any hope of building relationships and trust both of which are far more valuable. Sales follow trust.
    • Greg, no question, and the fact is there would be very little success with that approach anyway - however, sales people have a tremendous opportunity to use social media to educate and build relationships - which is what effective selling is all about these days.
    • That's exactly what I was alluding to in my original comment. Sales people should take the time to get to know social media behaviours and respond accordingly. This works really well.
    • Agree! I see a lot of business people use it only to "broadcast"... why limit the possibilities if you can also engage and deepen relationships?

      John,

Absolutely agree. I commented over at Amex also. Social media is a great tool for sales people. We've seen prospecting results improve EIGHT times using social media vs. volume cold calling.

      Thanks for spreading the word.
    • Hi John,

Wouldn't "affecting" be a more positive word than "infecting" ... or are you taking a certain stance?

      Thanks,
      John Carson

    • probably - although infection isn't always a negative - kind of like a virus
