This is a really fantastic article. My husband and I own a tire store, and we actually share a parking lot with a similar business. We end up referring customers to each other all the time, because there are services we don't perform at our store that the neighboring business does and vice versa. It makes for a much more amicable and, consequently, profitable circumstance.

This truly is a great idea. Working together benefits everyone involved. Even virtual businesses can take advantage of the points you made. For instance, mothers who regularly subscribe to parenting advice also might be interested in diaper deals, baby clothes sales, birth control news, and work-at-home mom tips. The only possible problem with collaborating - some may not work as hard as others. What do you do if you're working to update your info every week when your fellow business owner has the same, out-dated information? Pick up the slack for them? Drop them? I'd want to drop them.

Hi Jason -

You're right. It is so important to set expectation when asking someone to opt-in. It's also a good reminder to communicate if your email marketing policy changes.

Janine

This is a simple yet excellent idea. I am meeting in a few days with two business owners to discuss putting on a joint workshop in our area. I am also going to mention this strategy to them to assist each other in building our lists. Thanks!

Keeping it honest is the key here. People absolutely hate getting on lists they didn't ask to be on, so you'll need to make sure you disclose what you are doing and give people a choice to opt-in or not. If you don't, you'll get complaints that you are sending SPAM, and you'll lose your email marketing service and/or your Web host.

http://www.small-business-insurance.com.au
