The Secret to Getting Much More Done

Manage EnergyMostly I write about marketing and running a business, but I’ve sometimes strayed into writing about the fact that running a business takes figuring out how to get lots done every single day. Time seems to be the most precious resource of all when it comes to get things done, but I contend it’s managing energy is more important that trying to manage time.

See, the thing about time is that you can’t control it any way really – you can’t make stop it and you can’t make more. Energy, on the other hand, is something much more dynamic and much more in your control. Manage your physical and mental energy each day and you can get a lot more done.

Realizing this fact has led me to invest a great deal of “time” and “energy” in finding ways to develop more physical and mental stamina in an effort to get more done.

I’ve written about many of these ideas over the years, but decided to compile them in a handy eBook I’ve called Manage Energy Not Time: The Secret to Getting Much More Done.

In this compilation I talk about:

    It’s so cool that I’ve run into this now.

    I was listening to Pam the Marketing Nut’s podcast earlier and in it she was giving some really tough feedback, you know, the kind of feedback that can easily trigger the, “thems fightin’ words!” in some people who take everything personal or who wake up looking for reasons to be offended.

    Feedback good or bad is the breakfast of champions. If you put yourself out there as an entrepreneur you’re gonna get a TON of feedback whether you like it or not. The number of sales you make is feedback. The amount of traffic you get to your selling platform is feedback. The activity that happens on your social media channels is feedback.

    The champions know how to not to let good feedback – praise, high sales volume, high traffic counts, etc. get them too high on themselves.

    They also know how to not let bad feedback – no praise, low sales, little to no traffic, etc. get the best of them and how to absorb and assimilate the useful feedback. Especially the “what to do to turn things around” feedback that comes as the result of them seeking help from a mentor.

    Anger, frustration, resentment, apathy, etc. are all emotions that can come with getting “bad feedback” and they all have to do with psychic energy that needs to managed but that most of us are clueless in how to handle effectively.

    And this is why we’re lucky to have the intentional breathing part of your book to help us here.

    In a comment I left on her post, I told Pam that I respect tough feedback that comes from people who understand the market and are giving the feedback as a hand up instead of a beat down.

    I also brought up that one thing that I’ve been testing is something I learned from an incredible author by the name of David Deida. It is a strategy to calm
    yourself down when you’re feeling attacked and/or frustrated that something isn’t working.

    He talks about one of the ways to get back to a peaceful state of mind, a mind that is open to feedback, is this exercise . . .

    Close your eyes for a moment, relax, and remember how it feels to be deep in sleep.

    Imagine, right now, that you are sound asleep. Let go of the world for a moment,
    and just rest in the place of sleep. With your eyes closed, sink into the deep bliss of sleep for a few minutes , without actually falling asleep.

    Then slowly open your eyes, but continue to feel the bliss of sleep. Allow the world around you to appear, but stay in contact with the deep bliss of sleep.

    You can actually feel the deeply fulfilling quiet bliss of sleep even now, while you are awake. You can see the world around you and interact with people while maintaining feeling-connection with the part of you that is bliss full of sleep.

    I don’t know about you John, but in this state of mind, it is hard for my body
    and mind to be rigid.

    Relaxation is CRUCIAL to elite performance in every area of our life – even the act of actually going to sleep which a huge number of people have problems with.

    The state of FLOW comes from alert attention that is only possible when the mind and body is free of tension. And alert attention is the most valuable asset that I believe we posses. When we harness and channel alert attention, awesome things are possible for us.

    I will read this book. It reminds of a book I read a while ago called “The Power of Full Engagement” by Tony Schwartz – another good book on the subject of energy management.

    When it comes to actually doing your work, and using these concepts here is an idea. I recommend you tag your next actions with the type of energy you need to finish it. In you would then just filter your tasks list by the type of energy you are feeling now – so you can then choose the appropriate tasks to work on.
