Pin the Tail on the Donkey Marketing
Too much about marketing resembles this childhood game.

Do you remember that age old birthday party game – pin the tail on the donkey? I think it just might be the perfect metaphor for the practice of marketing most often employed by small businesses.

Stabbing in the dark for the magic way to build your business often leads to not so funny results.

There’s an exercise I want you engage in today that is intended to help you peek through the blindfold just enough to glimpse at the prize. (No, the ass is not the prize.)

In order to create a marketing plan and strategy, and the tactics to pull them off, you have to know what your overall business plan and strategy is.

I’m not going to ask you to go through the standard academic exercise of creating a business plan, but I would like you to take 15 minutes and consider the following.
(Please read this now and then lock yourself in a room, turn off the phone, and think through these questions.)

What is your vision for your company for next 3-5 years? (Tough question? Then break it down to these parts)

1. What is your vision for your customers? Will they be satisfied, thrilled? Will they buy more often, will they send referrals?

2. What is your vision for your staff? Will they feel like owners? Will they represent the brand?

3. What is your vision for yourself? Will you love what your do for a living? Will you take more profit, more time off?

4. What is your vision for your strategic partners? Will they model your business? Will they actively drive customers to your door?

5. What is your vision for the community? Are you a local hero? Do you measure doing well by doing good?

I believe these are the essential ingredients to creating a stunning vision for your business as a whole. When you can answer these questions and start to see a fully developed picture of your business achieving your overall vision, then and only then can your start to think in terms of a marketing strategy that will deliver this picture.

Once you’ve taken the blindfold off and have a very clear set of business and life objectives you can establish the marketing goals, strategies, tactics and metrics to make the business vision a reality. (See last week’s newsletter for more on that!)

The Open Book Experience - John Case

This book ties nicely to today's main article as it teaches a new way to think about what gets measured, taught and used inside a company to help it grow.

It deals primarily with the financial aspects but I think with a little imagination you can take the lessons beyond the financial numbers and start looking at ways to measure the intangible - the unseen things that really drive your company.
