Marketing podcast with David Allen
Marketing podcast with David Allen (click to listen, right click and Save As to download)
David Allen, author of the wildly popular book Getting Things Done, and the almost cult-like evangelized GTD system, is my guest for this episode of the Duct Tape Marketing podcast.
I think David's pretty brilliant, although you would probably never get him to admit it - his brilliance comes, in my opinion, from his consistent message that time can't be managed, it just is. Everyone tries to do this and that to time manage when GTD suggests all that you can do is decide what's important and make it easy to do that, without having the stress of trying to keep it all in your head.
The GTD system has taken form in all manner of software, planning tools and templates, but the beauty of it is that it's so simple all you really need is a pen, paper and some folders.

The State of Green Business
Marketing Podcast with Joel Makower (click to listen, right click and Save As to download)
The annual Earth Day celebration is a nice opportunity to focus on some of the not so earth friendly practices that small business owners can easily fall into.
For this week's episode of the Duct Tape Marketing podcast I visited with Joel Makower, editor of GreenBiz.com. We covered some of the simple ways that small business owners can improve their green practices and how business in general is coming to the realization that green business is more than marketing, it's good for business.

The breakthrough podcast
Marketing podcast with Keith McFarland (Click to listen, right click and Save As to download)
Keith McFarland, author of The Breakthrough Company, joined me for this episode of the Duct Tape Marketing podcast to discuss the elements that lead to a company taking off and going to the proverbial next level.
Incredibly, McFarland interviewed the leaders of and reviewed the numbers of 1400 past Inc 500 winners that had found a way to push past the $250 million range and narrow his list of breakthroughs to just nine. What you will find from the list is that while you may have heard of some of these companies they don't often show up on anyone's super cool list. It's mostly basic parts and services done executed brilliantly. Oh, and luck didn't seem to have much to do with success.

An entire industry, called coaching, is steadily discovering the small business beast and looking for ways to work with, provide service to and make a living doing it. I have even created my own coaching network, called Duct Tape Marketing Authorized Coaches armed with a true small business system to address the growing demand for small business marketing help.
In this episode of the Duct Tape Marketing podcast I visited with Diane Brennan, coach and president of the International Coaching Federation (ICF), the largest coaching industry group with over 14,000 members and 150 local chapters. Marketing Automation Podcast
Marketing podcast with Clate Mask (Click to listen, right click and Save As to download)
There seems to be a real struggle to capture the flag by software makers when it comes to small business CRM. It's very difficult to find a clear leader in this space, although many claim to serving it.
I think a far better term than CRM for the small business is marketing automation.
The notion of marketing automation software came directly from a recent conversation I had with Clate Mask, CEO of Infusion Software, on this episode of the Duct Tape Marketing podcast. Infusion has poured a great deal of effort into creating a marketing automation tool just for the small business, and while they may not be alone, they certainly seem to be on the right path. (Full disclosure - I am an Infusion user)

Marketing podcast with Dan Pink
Marketing Podcast with Dan Pink (Click to listen, right click and Save As to download)
Dan Pink is the author of two very important books on ideas around careers - Free Agent Nation and A Whole New Mind.
I caught up with him for this episode of the Duct Tape Marketing podcast to discuss his latest take on work called The Adventures of Johnny Bunko - The last career guide you will ever need. One of the most intriguing elements of the book is that it's written in the Japanese comic style known as manga - a book style known in the US by teens, but widely used to communicate every possible topic in Japan.

Are you Radically Transparent?
Marketing Podcast with Andy Beal (Click to Listen, right click an Save As to download)
Andy Beal, co-author of Radically Transparent, stopped by the Duct Tape Marketing podcast to talk about monitoring and managing your online reputation.
People, products and companies today all have two brands - online and off. The problem with this is that the online brand may or may not sync with their offline marketing messages.
User generated media, blogs and discussion forums have changed the flow of information about your company forever.
A new emphasis on reputation management, even for the tiniest of companies, is essential.

Presentations with Cliff Atkinson
Marketing podcast with Cliff Atkinson (Click to listen or right click and Save As to download)
Making stunning presentations of your ideas, products and services is a killer business skill and one that is rare. It's not that people can't learn to do this, it's just that most of the examples we are exposed to through PowerPoint slide shows are deathly as learning tools.
Cliff Atkinson, author of Beyond Bullet Points, stopped by the Duct Tape Marketing podcast to share his wildly successful presentation system. Cliff's approach not only goes beyond bullet points, the making of a visually stunning PowerPoint deck, he breaks down the strategy behind getting you ideas across in ways that not only entertain, but engage.

Marketing podcast with Kiva co-founder
Marketing podcast with Mark Flannery (click to listen or right click and Save As to download)
Mark Flannery co-founded Kiva.org with his wife a few years ago and their success has forever altered the way entrepreneurs in the developing world get access to the small amounts of capital that can make a huge impact on their businesses and lives. In doing so they've also opened up an entirely new channel of lending available to businesses and individuals who would like a way to help the smallest of businesses get going.
The incredible thing about this system is that it's a lending, not gifting, system that allows anyone to lend as little as $25 that might go towards a tiny fish selling business in Mozambique that might allow the owner to buy more product and provide a necessary service to a community.
The burgeoning venture has received incredible press attention from the likes of
(The Oprah Winfrey Show,
NBC's Today Show, and President Clinton's book "Giving".
