The Zingerman's Podcast

For this episode of the Duct Tape Marketing podcast I had an opportunity to learn about a truly unique business located in Ann Arbor, Michigan. My guests, Ari and Mo, are principles in a business known as Zingerman's Community of Businesses. Zingerman's started out as a deli that grew so popular franchising nationwide seemed inevitable. However, the owners determined another path.

Instead of growing the deli business beyond where they wanted to go, they started others businesses around their single store. Mail order, catering and coffee roasting just to name a few. But, the uniqueness of the model is that all the businesses were started by managing partners who have a share of the ownership in the business - thus the community moniker. Anyone is free to come to Zingerman's with an idea for a business and pitch it as a candidate to join the community. Several of the existing businesses were launched by Zingerman's employees.

Marketing podcast with Peter Shankman (Click to listen, right click and Save As to download - subscribe now via iTunes

I wrote recently about a great new service called Help a Reporter Out (HARO) - this service, founded by PR Geek Peter Shankman, matches journalists on a story with expert sources. Anyone can sign up to get the three daily emails full of stories just waiting for you to contribute to.

Peter's enthusiasm and New York pace shine through on this podcast. (Although admittedly I had a microphone issue on this recording and Peter's voice is a bit muffled) This is a great free tool and every small business should subscribe.

Talking with Josh Waitzkin

I've conducted hundreds of interviews of the last few years and I can't remember when I've had a better time talking with a guest than I did during this show with Josh Waitzkin. It's not often that an 8-time National Chess Champion, 13-time Tai Chi Chuan Push Hands National Champion and Two-time Tai Chi Chuan Push Hands World Champion stops by to talk small business.

Waitzkin is the author of a book that is solidly on my top ten for business owners and marketers. First off, the Art of Learning is an engaging read. Josh's story is hard to put down. The nuggets of insight into why and how we accomplish or don't accomplish is what really makes his approach to teaching and learning truly unique.

Bob Burg Talking About Referrals

Joe, the protagonist of the Go-Giver, learns that changing his focus from getting to giving, putting interests of others first and continually adding value to their lives, ultimately leads to unexpected returns.

It's an important lesson no matter how many times one hears it.

Marketing Podcast with John Assaraf

Marketing podcast with John Assaraf (Click to listen, right click and Save As to download)

My guest on this episode of the Duct Tape Marketing podcast is John Assaraf. You may recall the John was a central figure in the wildly popular - The Secret. John's core message of bringing the principles of quantum physics to business through his new book The Answer is an important leap that small business owners need to better understand.

Some of the current thinking around attraction and other natural laws can feel a little "new age" in business circles but I think it's pretty hard to deny the power of applying these concepts to growing a business that is authentic and life enriching. I often tell people who feel like this too big of a step to take a little piece of this and see if they can find something in it that helps them better understand how the universe works. Growing a small business is a lot of work, why not arm yourself with every tool possible?

Marketing Podcast with Money Mailer and Cellfire

Marketing podcast with Steven Gray and Brent Dusing (Click to listen, right click and Save As to download)

In this episode of the Duct Tape Marketing podcast I visited with Steven Gray of MoneyMailer and Brent Dusing of CellFire.

MoneyMailer is the clear leader in the direct mail coupon space with deliveries to over 160 million homes and CellFire is picking up steam delivering mobile coupons. The pair appeared on the show in part to promote a joint venture aimed at merging their specific mechanisms to the benefit of consumers and advertisers alike.

We spent some time talking about effective ways to utilize email as a marketing tool, dos and don't dos and new CAN-SPAM legislation that takes place in a few weeks.

Check out the VR Lounge - a unique social community from this unique email service provider.

You can read the entire FTC document if you want to hurt your head but it looks the two biggest changes impact folks that send offers in combination with other senders and some fairly technical language about opt out that can be handled best by using a one click very simply opt out method - a best practice anyway in my opinion. (This is not legal advice though!)

Mobility Tools and Technology

Marketing podcast with Tom Wilson (Click to listen, right click and Save As to download)

Tom Wilson, Executive Director of AT&T's Small Business Group, is my guest on this episode of the Duct Tape Marketing podcast.

I'm a big fan of technology for the small business because I think it's one of the great ways to level the playing field. In this show we spend time talking about tools the small business owners and sales folks can use to keep working even when they are on the go and out of the office.

The ability to respond to customers and prospects and do it from anywhere is a true competitive advantage. Enabling your staff to work from anywhere is quickly becoming an expectation.

Given my guest for this show the tools we discuss are obviously AT&T centric, but the concepts, important as they are, apply no matter the brand.

Charlene Li on Social Media

Marketing podcast with Charlene Li (Click to listen, right click and Save As to download)

<img src="http://www.forrester.com/Groundswell/images/Charlene-Li.gif" alt="Charlene Li" / align="left" vspace="5" hspace="5" border="0"/>Charlene Li, senior analyst with Forrester, stopped by the Duct Tape Marketing podcast to discuss social media and her new book, co-authored with Josh Bernoff, Groundswell.

Much of Li's work at Forrester is in working with very large organizations to help them understand how to use social media, but the funny thing is that most if not all of what is contained in the book applies to small businesses as well. In fact, big companies are actually diving head first into social media in a bit of an attempt to look and feel smaller.

Make no mistake, the Groundswell that Li and Bernoff cover in this book is not a passing trend, it's a reality.

I believe job #1 for any business, particularly small businesses, is to find a way to stand out, to be different. Doing so in a meaningful way (meaningful to a market segment that cares) is the secret to long term success, word or mouth buzz and ultimately more profit.

Up the Cash Flow podcast

Marketing podcast with Harvey Goldstein (click to listen, right click and Save As to download)

Harvey Goldstein a no-nonsense CPA and author of several books and software programs, including UpYourCashFlow, stopped by the Duct Tape Marketing podcast to spread his small business cash flow gospel.

UpYourCashFlow really isn't financial software in the strict sense, it takes your real data and tells you where you are headed and where the cash crunches are coming from. As Harvey says, most CPAs are great at telling you where you've been, it's a bit more helpful to know where you are going.

UpYourCashFlow really isn't financial software in the strict sense, it takes your real data and tells you where you are headed and where the cash crunches are coming from. As Harvey says, most CPAs are great at telling you where you've been, it's a bit more helpful to know where you are going.
Become a better speaker with Tom Antion

Marketing podcast with Tom Antion (Click to listen, right click and Save As to download)

Every small business owner can benefit from becoming a better speaker. It doesn't really matter if your ambitions are to sell across the desk or present across the globe, getting your message heard and acted upon is essential small business stuff.

In this episode of the Duct Tape Marketing Podcast, my guest is Tom Antion. Tom knows a thing or two about speaking and about teaching people how to be more effective speakers. If you want to make speaking a primary revenue source, Tom's your man for that as well.

Listen as he describes some of the keys to being a better presenter.

I think David's pretty brilliant, although you would probably never get him to admit it - his brilliance comes, in my opinion, from his consistent message that time can't be managed, it just is. Everyone tries to do this and that to time manage when GTD suggests all that you can do is decide what's important and make it easy to do that, without having the stress of trying to keep it all in your head.

The GTD system has taken form in all manner of software, planning tools and templates, but the beauty of it is that it's so simple all you really need is a pen, paper and some folders.

The annual Earth Day celebration is a nice opportunity to focus on some of the not so earth friendly practices that small business owners can easily fall into.

For this week's episode of the Duct Tape Marketing podcast I visited with Joel Makower, editor of GreenBiz.com. We covered some of the simple ways that small business owners can improve their green practices and how business in general is coming to the realization that green business is more than marketing, it's good for business.

Incredibly, McFarland interviewed the leaders of and reviewed the numbers of 1400 past Inc 500 winners that had found a way to push past the $250 million range and narrow his list of breakthroughs to just nine. What you will find from the list is that while you may have heard of some of these companies they don't often show up on anyone's super cool list. It's mostly basic parts and services done executed brilliantly. Oh, and luck didn't seem to have much to do with success.

Marketing podcast with Diane Brennan (Click to listen or right click and Save As to download)

An entire industry, called coaching, is steadily discovering the small business beast and looking for ways to work with, provide service to and make a living doing it. I have even created my own coaching network, called Duct Tape Marketing Authorized Coaches armed with a true small business system to address the growing demand for small business marketing help.

In this episode of the Duct Tape Marketing podcast I visited with Diane Brennan, coach and president of the International Coaching Federation (ICF), the largest coaching industry group with over 14,000 members and 150 local chapters. The ICF certifies coaches in core methodologies and helps individuals and businesses find coaches to work with.
