Twitter for businessTwitter has fascinated many while disgusting as many. Some seemingly normal individuals have become obsessed with it.

In case you’re not familiar – Twitter is a micro-blogging tool that allows you to tell the world, or your best friend, what you are doing now. The most basic tweet, as it is called, is an answer to what you are doing.

I’ve been drawn to it in a curious way, but never put much in it as a business tool because I don’t know that it has any real value, particularly if it’s going to cause me to build a list of followers and then post continuously. (Although I love it for events and meetings because event participants can use it like a news flash and announcement service in real time.)

    Recent updates to the service have made it mildly more interesting from a business standpoint

  1. You can now search and find anyone you know to follow (they have to give permission, but it makes building a list easier)
  2. Alex King’s twitter plug in allows WordPress users, that would be me, to post your tweets to your blog, but, and this is the best part, it also automatically creates an alert on your twitter feed every time you post to your blog – effectively giving your followers notice.
  3. Growing list of Twitter add-ons for the twitterati

I’m still mixed on the tool for small business, but if it has a fan base and it’s really easy for you to use, what the heck, play with it.

    Yes Bob, that’s kind of been my take on it but it’s hard to love everything so I’m always happy when I can point to tangible ways to work it into my routine.

  • In anticipation of launching our first web app next month, I’ve grabbed my company a Twitter feed. I’m still brainstorming what to use it for. A logical choice is for product updates and enhancements. Another would be to answer the “what are you doing” question when we’re at conferences or tradeshows. I use Twitter personally to tweet links to SOME blog posts.. Not all need that treatment.

    Alex King’s plugin ROCKS. I’ve embedded my feed on my blog and started using it for quick thoughts that don’t really warrant a blog post.

    Of course, how does a non-tech small business use it? Well, I’m not really sure if it makes sense.

  • I’ve just been plain avoiding twitter because I fear I’ll get addicted (seemingly normal person here ;). That and like you mentioned I’m just not sure how professional it is to have a twitter bar on my business blog. 🙂

  • We are using Twitter to communicate in our small, virtual software company. It has done wonders to help keep the day quiet, but at the same time keep everyone informed.

    It also helps while I am away, because I can get SMS when each person switches a task.

  • I too use twitter and you can get a lot of traffic going to your website along with stubmleupon. But less not forget there also other means of getting traffic to your site by using myspace and by presenting yourself as a leader.
